BRITISH AND FOREIGN. (From Exchanges.) March 18 th. General Molikoff and the Czarewitch are co-operating in putting down the Nihilist conspiracy. At St. Petersburg many prisoners hare been released. The Nihilists declaim any attempt on the life of Melikoff but are watching his actions. The Czar i's yielding under the guise of firmness. Prince Orloff, the Russian ambassador at Paris, was recalled on Saturday in consequence of the French Government refusing at the invitation of Russia, to give up the self-confessed Nihilist Hartmann, who attempted the life of the Czar. At a banquet given to Parnell at Cork, Biggar, M.P., raid that if the course their party was pursuing in Parliament failed in its object, Ireland might produce another Hartmann, with better results. The Agents General, especially Blythe, of South Australia, are urging on the Imperial Government the desirability of a reduction in wine duties, but the general elections are delaying a settlement of the matter. London*, March 22nd. H.M.S. Raleigh, which is conveying relief for the Australian station, will search Amsterdam Island for any traces of survivors from tho missing ship Kuowsley Hall. The warning given by Germany to Italy relative to the alleged intrigues of the latter with Russia against Austria, has led to a diplomatic correspondence, the result of which is that the Italian Government have given a distinct denial to the charge, and have expressed a desire to co-operate with the Great Powers in maintaining the peace of Europe. The French Chambers have voted 55,000 francs for the purpose of enabling the manufactures and products of France to be suitably represented at tho approaching Melbourne International Exhibition. Great preparations are being made in Ireland for the reception of their Royal Highness the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, who are about to visit that country. Amongst other features of intended ovation will be the lighting of signal bonfires on the hill tops announcing their arrival. The flying Squadron, commanded by Rear-Admiral Earl Clanwilliam, C.8., leaves England in April or May. The Bacchante, the probable flagship, visits Australia. It is likely that one or two of the sons of the Prince of Wales will accompany the squadron. Some papers allege there is increasing probability of the Prince of Wales visiting Australia. Ho will visit Melbourne in December if he comes at all. London*, March 24. * The Times in a leading artclc expcc’i that an equal balance of parties is likely to take place next Parliament. On the occasion of the Czar’s birth lay tho Emperor of Germany made a speech in which he expressed a hope that tho present satisfactory relations between Germany and Russia might be maintained. Constantinople, March 22! Colonel Syngor and wife, who were capturod last month by Greek brigands have now been released. News has been received from Mecca to tho effect that a religious fanatic has stabbed to death tho Grand Sheriff of the city. London, March 24. Tho Royal Commission dissolving Parliament has been issued. It states that England's relationship with Foreign Powers is of a friendly character, and considered most favorable for the maintenance of the tranquility of Europe. It also hopes for a speedy settlement of affairs in Afghanistan. The barque, Weymouth, arrived at London, on the 24th ultimo from New Zealand. Paris, March 25. The French Government having resolved to prosecute repressive measures against the Jesuits, are about to issue decrees dissolving the Society of Jesuits in France, and expelling all foreign members. London, March 25. The Empress Eugenie, together with suite, sailed to day for the Capo. Her Majesty the Queen left fot the Continent to-day. March 25th. Authentic intelligence has been received with reference to the movements of tho Afghan pretender, Andul Rahman, who recently crossed the River Oxus from tho Russian territory, and was believed to be arming at Balkh and Badakshar. Abdul Rahman has now joined the Turcoman forces under tho Mahomed Isa, near Akoclia, 44 miles from Balkb, and presumably intends to descend upon Cabal should opportunity offer. The strength of his force is not known. It is believed that General Roberts is watching his progress, and it is expected that British troops will secure the town of Charikar. on the road to Balkh, in order to oppose Abdul Rahman should ho advance. March 25. The total reserve in notes and bullion in in the Bank of England is L 17,875,000. Mr Gladstone is severely indisposed, his illness being caused by overwork and strain attending 'electioneering. It is announced that Prince Leopold will shortly,leave England on a tour through Canada and the United B laics."
Bombay, March 28th. Intelligence has been received from Cabul of severe fighting between that city and ■Gumlamuk. The Kohistanis having effected a junction with the other hostile tribes, made a desperate attack on the British p 'sition between Cabul and Gundamuk. Heavy fighting ensued, but the enemy were repulsed with great loss. Tho British loss was trifling. Dub UK, March 30lh. Since the arrival of Mr Parnell in lieland several speeches have been delivered ta uproarious meetings. Last night at Wexford he made a speech which had a had impression. When explaining his conduct and the Relief Funds question, tho platform was rushed, Mr Parnell being severely maltreated in the disturbance which took place. Calcutta, March 30th. According to the latest news from Cabul, there is a general rising of hostile tribes arennd Khyber Pass most imminent. The passes are being held, and proteotionary measures are being adopted by the British Government. Paws, March 30tb. The official decree for the suppression of Society of Jesuits and expelling foreign members from the country has been issued.
