INTERPROVINCIAL AND INTERCOLONIAL.
Mr James Wilson, of St. Alban’s stable, Victoria, has entered an action for libel against the proprietors of the Age, damages being laid at LSOOO, for statements made in connection with the late Autumn Meeting. On the 24th ultimo two shocks of earthquake were felt at Wellington. A Wellington telegram of the 21th ult. states that it had been raining steadily for six days, but that no damage had been reported. It has been resolved to establish a company in Melbourne to export overy description of food suitable for human consumption which requires to be frozen prior to transit. Mr David Syme, proprietor of the Melbourne Age, has commenced a libel action against the Melbourne Punch. Damages are laid at LSOOO. A late Sydney telegram states that a Company there has purchased the oil springs at Poverty Bay. The official statement of South Australian wheat statistics shows that the total acreage is 1,458,096, producing 14,260,964 bushels. The average yield is 9 bushels 47 pounds per acre for the past season. Thomas Hawkins, railway clerk, was, on the 25th ultimo, at Auckland, charged at the Police Court with embezzlement of several sums of money, paid on the freight of parcels. Prisoner, who had nothing to say, was committed for trial. At Wellington, on the 25th ultimo, Fk, Amor, one of the hard-labor gang, was killed while working at an excavation. He was under sentence for 12 months for larceny. He would have been liberated in a few days. The unfortunate deceased leaves a wife and two children. The Governor has received a cable message from tbo Governor of New South Wales, stating that Her Majesty's Ambassador at Paris has been instructed to urge the French Government to prohibit assistance being given to liberated convicts in emigrating from New Caledonia to the Australian Colonics. On the 27th ultimo, at the Christchurch Police Court, Francis Edward Graves, arrested for stealing L2lO at Saudridge, Victoria, was remanded for a month, pending the arrival of the warrant. Up to Friday evening last the 26th nit., 60,000 bags of grain had been carried for the week on the Christchurch section and branches. It is reported that Ned Kelly was seen purchasing provisions at a store near Glenrowan oil the 15th ultimo. The secret was unwillingly revealed by' a little girl. The promoters of the expedition applied to the British Government for permission to establish a free Colony in the north-west part of Australia, but were refused. In South Australia, recently, a woman named Mary Long, after being married two months, committed suicide, alleging that her husband slapped hqr. In Queensland a man named Young, while carrying a bottle of ruin near Owani- | gilla, was Attacked by an aboriginal, whom ho killed in self defence. A Wellington telegram of the 30th nit. states that “Sinking Fund," the wellknown i ico-bor.se, while being led in from
| ! the Hutt the day previously; to ship South, took fright at a passing train, broke away from the boy who rode him, and raced the train along the toad, injuring himself so much that it is feared his racing days are over. A private letter received in Christchurch from James Lillywhite, the well known cricketer, hints at a probable visit from an English team. On tbe 30th ultimo, Richard Webb, a clerk in tho New Zealand Insurance Company, Nelson, was arrested by the Lyttelton police, on a charge of embezzling monies belonging to the company. The first prize in Cameron’s sweep on the Christchurch Autumn Handicap has again gone to Timaru. Great complaints are being made at Timaru, the population of which is between 6 and 7 thousand, that there are only four constables available for octive’lduty.
