THE VALUE OF LAND IN BRITAIN.

Some tables regarding the value of land in Great Britain have been published, and afford information of much interest. The statistics commence with the financial year of 1863, and conclude with that of 1577. They are therefore anterior to the present complaint of agricultural depression. In ISG3 the gross amount of the valucof ‘ land’ assessed to the income-tax was, quoting to the nearest thousand, L 60,07-1,000. Fourteen years afterwards—viz., in 1877 -it had risen to LCD,439,000. This was an increase of 1.9,303,000, or more than per cent. Though the rate of progress differed somewhat in the three kingdoms, it was, all things taken into account, very'close upon the same level. In England the annual value of land was L 44,511,000 in ISC3, and L 51,51 1,000 in 1577. The increase was L 7, 200,000, or 16.1 per cent ; In Scotland it was L 6,715,000 in the one year, and L 7,090,000 in ,the other. This was equal to a rise in value of L 975,005. or 14 5 per cent. With regard to Ireland, the value returned for 1863 was L 5,748,000, which by 1877 had become L 9,938,000. showing an increase of LI, 190,000 or 13.6 per cent. The estimated population of the United Kingdom in 1877 was 33.437,000 ; the gross amount of the annual value of the land for that year was equal to L2 Is 6d per head of people.—Korth British Agriculturist.
