Mm idle an I her talented Company. Mr W. Williams who It will be remembered is applying for 040 acres on the boundary of Mataka ui and Montore Run, as a Coal Lease, is now busily engaged with a party prospectin'.; fo- a seam. La-t year be expends I a deal of labor in prospecting, but then failed in striking a seam of any thickness. Being convinced, however, that there is a seam in the neighbourhood, be lias a.an set into work Should he succeed as we sincerely hope hj« will, his discovery will prove a great boon to the district and a fortune to himse f. the which he will richlv merit for his p iswerance and pluck in under aking a search of the kind single handed. The appointment of Messrs Maitland, Bastings, an l Arthur, as Commissioners to classify surveyed sections on runs 3C9 and 221, being respec ively Cargill and Anderson’s run at the back of Bal 1 Hill Fiat, and Turnbull's Mouters inn, is m>lift din the Gazette. In onr Inst issue we re-printed from our Cromwell contemporary a paragraph to the elfect tbit pen Ung some mcc-saiy diem lions in the Or mwe'l Compmy's nunc at Bendigo, gome 3o or 40 men hl l been temporarily dismissed. Bv the published returns of ihe late examination of the .Sehonla in the interior ny Mr Pe.rie, School Inspector, we note that Clyde School alone had a scholar to pass successfully the sixth standard. Tim fact speaks well for the teacher, Mr J. E. Stevens. A waggon laden with wool, and drawn byeight horses, on its way down the serpentine road on the Cainnnuir range from the Hawksburn station to Earnseleugh flat, during the week, came to grief by toppling over. Beyond the breaking of a few straps and the rolling of the wool bales down the steep hill side’ there was no much harm done fortunately. Messrs H. Clarke, J. Fulton, and T. Fergus are the three successful candidates for the seats on the Education Board for the current year.
By reference to the advertisement in j another co'uran- -the programme of the ' Concert to be given at Alexandra on Thursday evening next 'he 25th instant,, will bo seen to he a most excellent ’one. Amongst the pei formers will he found the names of many old and famila" favorites, as also, some entirely new to fame. There is nothing like a well-filled room to give confidence, and it is to be hoped there will be one on Thursday evening next. We had presented to us during the week a box of peaches, grown by Mr Kichard Dawson, Conroy’s gully, and we must pronounce them tbe very best, borh for size, lusciousness and flavor, that we have tasted this season We feel fully persuaded that in any market in the world they would have commanded attention. The pears, apples, grapes, a id nearly every variety of plums that are grown by Mr Dawson, samples of which we from time to time have tasted, arc also very fine. We have to acknowledge the receipt of a hatch of parliamentary papers from the Government printer, Magnus Mount, one of the men working at the Civile Bridge works, met with a nasty accident on Wednesday morning last, getting on ; of his fingers badly lacerated in the crab winch He was at once taken to the Hospital, n 1 Dr Leahy dressed the injury. In a letter to the West Coast Times, Mr Button complains of Judge Weston recalling a jury after they had once been charged and addressing them a second time. Mr Button says he considers it “an unjustifiable attempt on the part of the Judge to lead the jury to the conclusion which ho himself had most unmistakeably formed. At tbe conclusion of the meeting of the Acclimatisation Society, Mr Fulton said be wished to say a few words in reference to the sparrow post. The fa.mers had always been under the impression that the introduction of the sparrow to the Colony was due to tbe action of the Society, bui such was not the case.
