A meeting of the subscribers to the Clyde ( Athenaeum ami Public Library was hehl in the Library Chamber on Wo'nesday even* t in* last, the 2/3 th, for the purpose of re* ceiving the report of the retiring members of the Trust, ami the election of a new Boar-1. Vincent Pyke, Esq., occupied the chair. Mr Geo. Cache (Honorary Secretary) rea.l the report as follows t “ Clyde, 25 hj February, ISBO. “ The outgoing Committee of the Clyde I Athenaeum and Library Trust have to report us follows : *’ During the tenure of office of the retiring Committee considerable alterations have been made, which they trust will I o regarded as improvements. 385 volumes have been aided to the library, the library has been thrown open free of charge to the pu die, ami a number of periodicals In ve boon placed upon the table for general use ; some of those have been purchased, and others have been forwarded free of charge. “The retiring Coimoi'too was hopeful that those inducements would cause largo ace ssiona to the list, of subscribers and the ' funds of tbo lus'itutiou, but such anticipa- , tinns have not lioon realised. It s am ns clear therefore to your retiring Committee that

unless fullei - appreciation of the advantages offered is shown by the public, it will bo impossible to continue the free use of the Institution to the public. “ Tlie retiring Committee regret to state that there are heavy arrears duo which it will tax he energies of the incoming Trust to discharge. On tlie other hand it. is satisfaotory to learn that a considerable sum will be forthcoming from the C unity Conn il in liquidation of the accounts as between the County Conned an I the late Borough of Clyde It is to be hoped that tins sura will bo conserved and utilised for the permanent advantage of the town. “ Tlie investigations of the retiring Committee have led to the conclusion that the Institution may be made self supporting in the future if it is fairly supported by the public, for whose benefit and advantage it was origin dly designed; and it is hoped and expected that all classes of ihe commindly will unite to support an Institution ■of so truly beneficial a character. “ Vincent Fyke, Chairman. “ Henjvmin Naylor, Treasurer. “ J E. He explains I that'the -large reserve at the smith en I of the town, between the to vn and the Hospital, had been vested in the Trust under the Public Dnnains Act, he accordingly hoped the subscribers in the •election of the Trust for the ensuing year would select the b st men for the position. Mr Smart, who was a half-yearly sub sciiber, asked for leave to qualify himself by paying up his a»nual snbscrip’inu The Chairman said it was for the meeting to decide, and if tiny were unanimous there-conld be no obj ction. Mr Holt ol j -cling, the Chairman decided against the application. The election of members of Committee was now proceeds I with, and Messrs Pyke, V elsfnrd, Stevens, Holt, Fache, Wi son, Naylor, Attfield, Dew ir, and Joss, havi g been Humiliated, a ballot was taken with tlie following result : Canibri Ige. 13; Pyke, 12; -Stevens, 12; Fache. 11 ; Wilson. 10; Naylor, S ; Attfield, S ; Weis ford, 5 ; Holt, 5 ; Dewar, 5 ; Joss, 2 The first seven having been declared duly e’ected, the meeting dissolved. A mooting of the Trust was then held, all Hi,- members exc-pt Mr Atlfidd beingpresent. Mr Pyke, who occupied the chtir, said the business would bo the election of olii- \ ccrs, appointment of Committees, and fix- j ing data of next meeting.
