OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY.
At tlie last meeting of the Maniototo County Council, the following memorial, signerl by the members of the Hyde Progress Committee, was presented and read:— “ Hyde, January 27th, 1880. “ To the Maniototo County Council, “ Mr Chairman am) Gentlemen, “We the un -ersigned members of the Hyde Progress Committee res lectfully direct your attention to the fact that the appropriation made during the recent session of Parliament for tho construction of the Otago Central Railway to the Taieri Lake will in all p-obahility lapse, unless your valuable and strenuous endeavours arc e\'erte rt to prevent such a calamity, which would prove especially detrimental to the interests of this C unity. “We would urge your immediate cooperation with the other Counties concerned, to get this very desirable and important work brought under weigh at as early a date as possible. “We would respectfully suggest, in addition, that immediate steps are necessary to prevent the possibility of the lapsing of a work of such vital importance as the one we now most respectfully direct your attention to.” Cr l.averty, in introducing the memorial, said that Dun- din influences were at work, notably that of the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, to delay this important work, and trusted this Council would give effect to the prayer of the memorial. Cr .Sharp en agreed with the remarks made, and moved the following resolution, which was carried unanimously :—“That this Council would respectfully urge on the Government the advisability of calling for tenders immediately for that portton of the Otago Central Railway between the sections now being constructed and the Taieri Lake, and that the members for Mount Ida and Dunstan electoral districts he requested to communicate with the Minister of Pub. lie Woks in the matter ; and further, that the Vincent and Taieri County Councils he requested to co operate with this Council towards the accomplishment of the above object.”
