ENTERTAINMENTS.

The Star Variety Troupe, a company of amateurs engaged on the Earnscleugh and Ilawkslmrn Stations, gave two voluntary entertainne nts in the Town Hall, Clyde, since our last issue— on Friday evening in aid of the funds of the Dnnstan District Hospital, and on Tuesday evening in aid of the Irish Distress Relief Fund. On Friday evening the large hall was well filled by an appreciative audience, whom the Troupe succeeded beyond anticipation r* pleasing On Tuesday evening there was not so inimeious an attendance ; the Troupe, however, relaxed nothing in tiioir effirts to please and fairly succeeded. One trifling contretemps on each occasion marred to a slight extent the real enjoyment. The delinquent in the exuberance of his spirits (battle-axe brandy or bull dog whisky, we are afraid) rather overdid the thing, and reduced the comic songs ho attempted into simple buffoonery ; and by way of advice we would suggest to the other members of the Troupe that should they again appear in public, to allow the “spirited’’ gentleman to take a back seat. The programme was very creditably ami faithfully gone through, the bursts of applause that followed each effort showing that Idle veidict in their favour was unanimous. At the close of the entertainment, Mr Vine nt Fyke made a few remarks on the disinterested motives wh ch had promoted (he lady and gentlemen to voluntarily offer their services for the benefit of the local Hospital, and called on all to give them a hearty vote of thanks This was heartily responded to, and utter the singing of the National Anthem by the whole house, the audience dispersed. The sum raised amounted to hj .

On Tuesday evening the performance, with slight alterations, was repeated, in aid of the Irish Distress Relief Pond. At its close a hearty vote of thanks to the Troupe for their services was carried with acclamation.
