A strike of operators took p l ace on the 2nd instant at Wellington, owing to the extension of working hours and the abolition of overtime. The strike occurs throughout the principal offices of the Colony. The Government have given instructions to the Deputy Commissioner of the Land Tax Department to immediately sue for arrears of laud tax.
As the result of the inquiry into the railway collision at Sydney recently, the engmedriver has been disrated, and the traffic manager, who was on the engine at the time of the collision, fined a month’s •alary.
The result of the trial of the rioters at Christchurch, has been the commitment of the majority to take their trial. Eight of the rioters at Tiraaru have been arrested.
Mrs George Darrell, the actress, died on the 3rd instant, in Melbourne. On the 3rd intant, at Timarn, the rioters were all committed to take their trial, bail being allowed. The Prince of V.'ales has abandoned the idea of visiting Australia next year. Meldrum v. Proudfoot is the only important civil case to come on in Dunedin this session. The plaintiff is the widow of the man who was killed on the tramway a month or two since.
A petition is being signed in Sydney in favor of the commutation of the sentence of death passed on the Wautabadgery bush rangers.
A gentleman in Auckland is suffering from erysipelas iu his hip through wearing stocking with poisonous coloring in them Armstrong, whose arm was broken during the riots at Christchurch, will very probably have to suffer amputation. Victoria carried off the champion prize for the best exhibit of merino wool at the Sydney Exhibition. At Sydney recently a man named Davis struck one Mansfield on the mouth for publicly defaming his wife. Mansfield bled to death iu as hour.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin has telegraph - en that t.he distress in Ireland was of sufficient magnitude to warrant the collection of subscriptions in the Australian colonies. Movements are being initiated in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney for relief of the prevailing Irish distress. The Sydney Executive Council have declined to commute the sentence of death passed on Scott and lb) ::in.
It is reported that Sir 11. Robinson has offered 590 guineas for Mr Walter’s c>lt Libeller, hut it is not thought that Mr Walters will sell him, as ho is in very light for the Cup. Alburnia shares are falling, notwithstanding the divi lead of 2 )< re-ently paid.
