BUSHRANGING IN N.S.W.
A Sydney telegam states that a desperate encounter took place at Gundagai between the police and a mob of bushrangers. The following are the details :
Sydney, Nov. 17 —lnformation has been received that seven bushrangers yesterday stueßup the Natabadgery hotel and stationHhking arms, ammunition, money, and nurses. Four policemen were sent from Wagga in pursuit. They encountered the bushrangers and shots were exchanged, but nobody wounded, the police being eventually obliged to retreat, leaving their horses in the hands of the robbers. The Clarendon mail was also stuck up. A strong body of police are now out in pursuit.
Nov. 18—A telegram from Gundagai tonight states that a desperate encounter took place between the police and bushrangers. Two of the latter were shot dead, one was wounded, and two secured ; one escaped. One constable is very seriously wounded.
Later— The Natabadgery bushrangers bailed up over thirty persons. Moonlight and Nesbit, alias Captain Scott, the Egerton Bank robber, were amongst the gang, and the former was its leader He was captured uninjured. Three civilians, going to assist the police, fell into an ambuscade. They were given five minutes to prepare for death. The police arriving a desperate fight ensued, The sixth bushranger has
lie 'ii captured. He was found concealed in a bouse cl ,se to the scene of the ehconn er. The constable wounded yesterday is i. a critical state. The bushrangers have been identified as Victorians. They are five youths, under the leadership of Captain Moonlight. They intended to rob the Guudagai Bank.
4.6 p. m—Constable Bower is dying The surgeons are unable to extricate the ball, which is lodged in his neck.
