Two of the children had their clothing destroyed, and were slightly burned. Best beef is selling at Jd per lb. in Sydney. The squatters are subscribing liberally towards the cost of a shipment home. The publicans of Wellington (save one) agree that after the 10th of next month there shall be no more fourpennv drinks. Mr G. E Barton is now in San Francisco, and has been retained to defend Do Young, editor of the Chronicle, who shot the Rev. MrCallock. Nominations for three of the events, to he decided at the Autumn Meeting at Forbury Park closed on Saturday last. Fur the Cup. there are 40 entries ; for the Publicans’ Handicap, there are 23 entries, and for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, there arc 34entries. The attempt to reduce the mayor’s allowance at Wellington has been defeated. On the 21st ultimo, a man named Christian Arras, was discovered dead in a field about three miles from Timaru On examination he was found to have been shot through the heart, A single b.u-rel'ed cun was beside him. No doubt exists hut that he committed suicide. No motive is known for the deed, as he ha-1 left between L3O and L4O in his hut. He is supposed to have been drinking. In Queensland, about 30 miles frnni Ravenswnod, in the direction of Strathalvin, gold has been discovered. There are 1,000 tons of auriferous stone on the surface. Eight dishes of rubble gave 4dwts. The ship Waipa, from London has arrived at Port Chalmers. Mr William White, an early settler in the Merton district, was so severely gored by a hull last Friday that he died on the following day. A Sydney te'egram says “ Some members of the Melbourne police force discovered a young lady, aged 15, in a house nf ill fame. The girl staged that she and her sister had on many occasions spent a day there instead of going to sch ml. She was first accosted by a woman three weeks ago. The number of petty thieves is increasing. and pocket-picking is general in Melbourne. A Melbourne telegram says—“A chemical mixture has been discovered which will preserve butter in ordinary kegs for an indefi'fite period without salt. The house of Mr Robinson, of Cambridge near Auckland, was reo -ntlv struck by lightning. A man, inside, escaped uninjured.
