The Dunstan Times.

Benea'h the ride of men entirely just the pen is mightier than the SWORD.

bRI DAY, OCTOBER 24, 1879,

In our last week’s issue we referred to the Public Meeting to he held at Alexandra to morrow evening, “ To take steps to procure a road to bo opened to the Waikaia bush.” The importance of the question is sufficient excuse for ns again drawing attention to it. From time to time for years past the question has been ever cropping up, but beyond sending a party of men to

see whether it was practicable to connect Alexandra with the bush really nothin; has been done, and the district is no nearer now of bemg supplied with timber at a cheap rate than if nothing had ever been attempted. When that it is known, and as it is admitted on all sides, it consequently must be known, that the district has been fairly languishing for the want of timber at a cheap rate for mining, building, fcnoing, and a thousand and one other purposes, the only wonder is that the question has been allowed for so long to be unsolved. Though the question is being taken up by the people of Alexandra, it is fairly one for the whole County to take up, and we shall hope to see those portions of the County more directly interested well represented, to add weight to any decision that may be arrived at. We do not purpose to assume what may be the result of the meeting, but doubtless one of the conclusions will he to approach the Counties ot Vincent and Tuapeka through whose territories the road will pass, and petition them to undertake it, but as it is scarcely to be expected that the Counties will pay much heed to the petition of a Municipality, the greater the reason then for the meeting to take the form of a County me ting. The Waikaia bush is a magnificent one covering a large extent of country, and if brought within an easy distance of the district would prove one of the greatest possible boons, and tend more to its settlement and advancement than any other outlay of money we know of. We conclude therefore that if a determined stand is taken by the meeting, and a good strong committee formed, to pub the matter in its proper light before the C um:y authorities what they seek will be obtained.
