GOVERNMENT INSURANCE.
Amongst the Parliamentary Papers to hand is the IS7S 9 Annual Report of the Government Insurance Commissioner, from which we glean the following interes'ing particulars, and which show the continued and satisfactory progress of the Department The report says—Notwithstanding the financial and commercial depression which has been experienced in the year now reported on, the new business of the office has advanced, showing the spread of a prudent thrift among the inhabitants of the Colony. Number of policies issued for the nine and a half years during which the Department has been in operation, 12,896. assuring a sum of L 4,533,733, and of these policies 2582 have been discontinued by lapse, surrender, death, or otherwise At the close of the year there were 10.314 existing policies, assuring L 3,744,997. During the year 547 policies were discontinued, of these 82 were by death. 60 by surrender, 404 lapsing, with a total amount assured of L 200,964 New policies issued during the year, 2071, representing an assured amount of L 686.283. The report then gees on to say that the first division of profits will, after an actuarial investigation, take place at the close of the financial year now current, that is to say, after 30th June, 1880, in accordance with statutory enactment.
