The Dunstan Times.

Beneath the rule of men entirely just the PEN' is mightier than thi s- word.

RII I A V, OCTOBER 3. .^79

The contractors for the Alexandra bridge arc getting on famously, tire Eastern pierbeing now some six feet above the waterlevel, while the to*al height of masonry above the concrete foundation is somewhat over twenty feet, about another seven or eight feet will bring them above ordinary summer level, and which if reached before a Hood occurs, work will be able to be continued right throughout, till the pier is completed. The season has been a most favourable one for the undertaking, and every credit is due the contractors for the energv and foresight displayed, thus enabling them to take advantage of is.

A thorough change of Police Officers in the district under the charge of Mr Inspector O’Donuell has lately been effected, Sergeant liul ert atrd Harder Gordon being removed fmm Clyde »<> Wellington anil Titnaru respectively. Sergeant U’.Neill and Constable Hell front Na-eby, transferred to Clyde and Blacks respectively. Sergeant Brown from Blacks to Arrow. Sergeant Mot tort front Arrow to Queenstown, and Sergeant Edward Morton from Queenstown to Naseoy. With regard to Sergeant Builen, who has been stationed at Clyde for tire past few years, we cannot but say that he is a painstaking efficient officer, atrd if our gooil wishes go for aught we wish him that preferment his abilities richly merit. Our Naseby contemporary in speaking of Sergeant O’Neill, says-“We regret to bear of die intended transfer of Sergeant O’Neill, of Naseby, to Clyde. The Sergeant is one of the finest officers in the force, and we trust that the next item we shall have to record concerning him will be his elevation to the rank of Sub-inspector. Tbts is a position he well deserves, as he has been a long time in tire force, artel is possessed of alrrrost every quality that goes towards making air efficient and reliable police officer— being capable, and rerun, kab y attentive to his duties ; abstinent to a degree; having the power of discriminating when interference nr any public matter would do harm or good ; and above all, carrying on bis dudes, whatever they may be, in a gentlemanly, uimsten ateoas m.inner. We wish him speedy promotion ” W r t are informed by the lo'-ai an horilies, that fortntgdy, instead of moil hiy, Courts will be held at Alenin Ira, from and alter Monday the ‘2ddr hist, which will be a Court day. The ineivased work at this office necessitated rhe change, and will prove a great eonvlenience.

Last Sunday evening the Rev. J. Lothian lectured in a numerous congregation at Alexandraon the subject'd “ .timl- ni Freethought, and its influence on .Society,” with some special remarks on the pseudo freethought movement in Duujlin. I'ho lecture will he re delivered in the Town llal., Clyde, on Sun'ay next, at 7 p.m.

As an ou'come of the recent meeting of unemployed in Duucdm and th i representations nude to the Government by the members for the city, Mr W. A. B1 dr. Enjoin r-in-Charge, Middle Island, forwarded to the Oily Council a memo ot what was heinii done to provide work. lie says : “ Four miles of the Ota,) Central Hallway, from Muiloeky Gully onwards, called the Hiu lon section, were originally reserved for the unemployed, but more men came than was expecte I, so two more miles were taken in. The whole length of six miles is now fully occupied hy 350 men, and about 50 more are on ihe grouu I waiting opening up of another mile. .Since seeing you yesterday the Hon. the Minister for Public Works has authorised us to open up whatever additional length is necessary to give the men work. We shall then fore open up the three miles between the present end of the work and the Taieri Crossing on Friday, and three miles more between that and De p Stream immediately thereafter as required.”

Mr A. Oliver’s property—The Elms, on the Dunstan Fiat—is iu the market for sale. The property is very compact, comprises 3o acres freehold and 35 acres leasehold, house, garden, and water for irrigation. This is an opportunity for acquiring a small property seldom to ho met with. The Rev. T. E. Ash repeated his interesting lecture on “London” at the Bannockburn on Tues lay last to a goo I audience Mr Anderson occupied the chair.

Owners who intend entei ing their horses for the Handicaps at either the Alexandra or Clyde Races, shou'd hear in mind that nominations for the former have to he sent iu to th° Secretary on Wednesday next, the Bth inst., and for the latter on the loth inst. A good ileal of outside interest is being taken iu these events, an 1 we accordingly look forward to them being most successful.

A Chinch of En.dand Soiree, we understand, is arranged to he held at Clyde on Tuesday, the 2Sth inst.

Ihe cricketing season is to he opened by a majeh between Uiy.de nu.l Cromvvll, on the ground of the former, on Saturday, the 11th inst. The Clyde Club has made a new ground for the season, which will be a great improvement on the old one and far more convenient, it being close up to the town instead of a mile an ay. Up to the present we have seen but little practice by the Clyde team, if they wish to retain their good name we ca-not hut think they should show them-elves more fiequently and in greater numbers on the ground. The next game to he played that we hear of is between the boys of the two towns, when a handsome silver match goblet, the gift of Mr Thomas Webb, of Clyde, will he presented to the Highest sco ver. We look fm ■ ward to this match as being very interesting, as to secure the trophy all the boys are in full practice, and doubless each will do his level best to secure it. In the evening after the inat.-h we believe that a fete especially for the youngsters will be given iu the Athenaeum Hail, Cromwell. A meeting of the Committee of the Tonic 8o!-Fa Society, Alexandra, was held on the JOth ult. The Secretary and Treasurer gave in their reports, which were adopted, and as the Society was well oil for funds it was resolved ro continue the meetings for practice for some time longer. Under the leadership of Mr Kinnaiid the members have made considerable progress, and the juvenile members taie much interest iuthe singing.

If the accounts that reach us of the deadly effect on the rabbits by the poisoned wheat that is being now scattered broadcast over the country he true, the occupation of the rabbit shooter will soon be at an end, and the time ex? ended by the County Council at its last sitting re the “Rabbit Nuisance Act ” will be as wasted. We are informed that wherever the wheat is scattered the dead rabbits are to be seen in thousands, and that where a shooter could previously have bagged bis hundreds a day it is difficult now to get a shot. And, moreover, the sheep aid lambs do not appear to notice it. We most certainly hope the accounts we hear are correct, as there is but little question, despite the thousands that were being shot daily, that had S"ine other measure not been adopted foe their annihilation, they would soon hive had the entire countiy to themselves, as it would have been impossible for any other . rass-ealing animal to have lived. It will be seen by our Advertising Columns, that »he rate of wages payable by the Vincent County authorities, after the Ist of November next will be, Labours Ss per day, horse and dray 10s per day. It was decided at the last meeting of the Education Board that the increased rale of salaries, and honours to teachers, date from the Ist of October.

With ail tin; cry of the unemployed, there are only three immigrants in the Duneili.i Banavks

It is stated on authority hit the Bank of New Zoa’aiid, dissadsliol with the conditions on which it holds the Government hanking account, has giv» n the neeessaiy notice to terminate its e mtract. The terms on which the hanks in the other Colonies hold the various public accounts are of a much more advantageous character for the hanks than those given hy tins Colony to its Inuker.

Our c- in temporaries the Wak dip Mail and Cromwell Argus have been somewhat exercised of late over a rumoured change of War Ins Major K rldell to he transform! to Queenstown, an i M ■ Strai for 1 to Mount I la. Toe Mount [da Chronicle says :

“ Wo are in a position to state the rumour- ■ ■(1 change of Mr evnuford is without founds ion, and we can as safely say that Major Ke idell wil' not, at all events for a season, sojourn at Queenstown. On the part of our Wukatip friend perhaps the wish was father to the thought.”
