Five tons of giant powder exploded in a magazine at B’die, California, killing three men and seriously wounding several others. Five ladies were drowned through the mismanagement of a steam launch on the St. Lawrence Biver. There were 291 persons on board. Ambrose Fortescne and William Bangor have been apprehended in London for endeavxiricg to pass an altered cheque on t he Bank of England They are supposed to belong to a strong gang of American forgers operating in England, France, and America. The hop crop in Kent threatens to be a disastrous failure. The Warwickshire miners declare that the award of the umpire in the wages dispute means starvation to them. Cardinal Manning preached the funeral sermon on the Prince Imperial at Chisulhurst in presence of the Imperial family. The utmost alarm prevails at. the prospect of the had harvest in France. The harvest in Southern Franco is nearly completed, The quality is good, but the quantity is hardly up to the average. The depression in the Switzerland watch trade is increasing and causing considerable anxiety.
The harvest] in Hungary is reported to he a failure.
A private letter from Tdlis reports that the Russian soldiers are suffering from typhus, dysentery, and acne. A torpedo boat attached to Admiral Hazarcff’s frigate at .Constantinople, was blown up while at practice. Five men were killed ami fourteen wounded. Incendiary fires continue in Russia. The Siberian cattle plague has broken out again, and destroyed 215.70S cattle and 23110 horses last year.
The Russian Minister of the Interior reports 3500 fires in June, causing damage to the extent of 12,000,001 roubles ; 300 fires were incendiary.
Cholera has made its appearance at Smo leusk.
