At Wellington, on the 7th instant, two shocks of earthquake were felt. Kecentlv, a woman named Dempsey died at Emu Plains, New South Wales, aged 100. It is officially announced that the Sydney Exhibition will be opened in the middle of September. News from Sydney is to the effect that very heavy floods are expected in the upcountry districts ; also, that a heavy fall of snow bad taken pla ;e, and thousands of sheep a r e reported drowned in consequence of the flooding of the rivers.

At the R.M. Court, Wellington, on the 9th instant, a Mr and Mrs Evans, two new arrivals from London, were sentenced to imprisonment for four weeks and three months respectively. They were only married the day before, and obtained money to pay for a marriage license by false pretences, on which charge they were arrested. The report of the Mutual Life Association, Sydney, has been published, and. shows that the gross receipts for the half year were L 421,000, and the profit for the same period L 64.000. 73 horses have accepted for the Melbourn Cup. At Timaru on the 11th instant, Charles Walkden Wood, was committed for trial on three charges of fraudulent bankruptcy. A fouih charge is still proceeding. An Auckland telegram says :—“ Mr Hobbs, M. H.R , divided LIOO of his honorarium amongst the following charities Parnell Orphan Home, L 25; St. Mary’s Home, L 25 ; Children’s Home, 1,2" ; Ladies Benevolent Society, L 25. Mr Tole is said to contemplate somewhat similar steps.
