It inspires them with Hope, for in the bright lexicon of youth there is no such word as fail. Alas ! say ! many, ■ this is correct,—is true with regard to the youth who has never abused his strength—and to the man who has not been “ passion’s.slave.” But to that youth—to thatiman, who has wasted his vigor, who has yielded himself up to the temporary sweet allurements of vice, who has given unbridledjlicense to his passions, to him the above lines are but as a reproach. What Hope can he have? What aspirations ? What chance of leaving hi* footprints on the sands of time ? For him, alas ! there is nought but dark despair and self reproach for a lost life. For a man tojeave his footprints on the sands of time, he must be endowed with a strong brain and nervous power. He must possess a sound, vigorous healthy mind, in a healthy body—the power to conceive—the energy to execute ! But look at our Australian youth ! See the emaciated form, the vacant look, the listless hesitating manner, the nervous distrust, the senseless, almost idiotic expression.
