MR. CHARLES BROAD.

When this gentleman was presented with an address and a purse of sovereigns at Westport a few days ago he told his guests that he had been a Government Officer for a great many years—twenty years in Victoria and seventeen in New Zealand—anil had always found that a large amount of practical knowledge was to be gained by intermixing with the people. Many persons heM that it is not right fora warden to mix with the miners ; but the people who held such views were wrong. His knowledge of mining was only theoretical, and to adjudicate upon eases fairly he had to gain practical experience, and the only way to obtain it was to mir with the miners. He had cases coming before him in which plans were produced, a lot of evidence taken, and all other precautions observed to cause fair dealing between man and man, hut after he ha I visited the ground in person, and inspected the points in dispute, he had come to decisions which he never should have arrived at had he not obtained practical knowledge of what he was called upon to decide He did not think there avas airy p'ace on the coast now, excepting Goßingwood, where he had not, been Warden, and ho would just, remark that when stationed at Reeftnn, his district was bounded bv the Devil Grip and the Cannibal Gorge, neither of which places, he was happy to say, he had been required to visit.
