ALEXANDRA.

The ball and supper given on Friday evening last to commemorate the anniversary of the Court Pride of Alexandra Ancient Order of Foresters, was one of the greatest successes of the kind that has ever taken place at Alexandra. The large hall (Town Hall): was for dancing inconveniently crowded, blit from the hearty good humor with wh’ch the necessary jostling of a crowded room was taken, it was evident every one thoroughly, enjoyed, themselves. A certain amount ot disappointment was felt at the very small muster of outside visitors, but the -unanimous response that was given to the'invitation by the local residents made up . for- the shortcomings of their neighbors. Beyond what may be fairly termed the residents Of Alexandra, that is. including Bald Hill Flat, and the Valley of the Manuherikia, theie were only some half-a-dozen- others, including three from Clyde, and the same number from Blacks. The Hall was prettily decorated, and when the whole bevy of lovely maidens in their many colored dresses were present, it presented a very bright appearance. The refreshments were of the very best, and g'-eat credit is due to the purveyor.. It may be beyond the province of an occasional correspondent to detail other than facts, and venture his opinion, and some will say, “ A fig for your opinion Mr Anonymous Scribbler, give us facts,” well, may be they are right, but, however, on the question of exclusiveness, you attend to your own village affairs, and we will keep the wheels of our own well oiled, I am forced to say that at the least it is impolitic, and moreover it shows a want of good judgment. If at these occasional gatherings, the hand of friendship and good fellowship were freely extended, not only from a social point of view would good results accrue, but commercially, also, would it be a benefit. It would tend to allay the bitter and acrid feeling that at present exists, and make an united whole of what is now a disjointed and disconnected people. If at the next affair that is got up, whether at Alexandra, Ophir, Clyde, or elsewhere within reasonable distance, should there he a more general attendance, I shall think that my humble effort to break through this exclusiveness lias had its effect, and I shall take credit accordingly. It is on the tapis to get up a grand concert, I say grand and that advisedly, as 1 hear that ail rhe talent (musical and vocal) within the distinct have have been asked to give their assistance here in the course of a few weeks. It is also rumored that the Rev. Mr Ash has consented to give us a lecture, therefore we have the prospect of being pretty gay this winter. The concert is to defray in part the district’s share ot the cost of erecting the., light traffic bridge across the Manuherikia, and the lecture will bp for the benefit of the Dunstan District Hospital.
