Loe, of Leoston, attempted to shoot himself last Saturday. Tho charge glanced off his cheek-bone, and it is thought ho will recover. Temporary monetary embarrassment is supposed to ho the cause. At a subsequent meeting of his creditors an approximate statement was read showing the liabilities to be L 40.030, and tho assets L 50.300. The Maoris in Southland predict a fine winter. Tiic yield of wheat in Victoria for the past season was 5,750,000 bushels, showing a decrease as compared with 1878 of 1,302,792 bushels. It is intended to organise cheap excursions from England to Sydney during the Exhibition on two of the largest and most powerful steamers afloat.
