KAITANGATA RELIEF FUND.

VINCENT COUNTY LOCAL COMMITTEE. On Tuesday evening last a meeting (and what must be looked upon as the last) of the above Committee was held in the Committee Room of the Clyde Public Library. V. Pyke, Esq., M.H. 11., occupied the chair, Mr Warden Simpson, Mr B. Naylor (Treasurer to the Committee), Mr Cambridge, Mr G. Fache, and Mr Aria (Hon. Secretary), being also present. The Chairman said the meeting was called for the purpose of receiving from the Secretary his report, and called upon him to read the same. The Secretary said there had been received from the Central Committee 25 subscription lists, 21 of which had been distributed throughout the County, and four had not been used. Of the 21 lists issued 17 had been returned, with a total sum of LI 16 Ms 6d, and four had not yet been returned. Thus the 25 lists were accounted for. The returned lists-were as follows : Messrs Aris and Cambridge (Clyde), Ll4 7s ; Mr G. Clark (Vincent County Clerk, Clyde) L 6 5s ; Mr B. Naylor (Clyde), L2 Gs ; Mr Hotop (Clyde), Id Is Gd ; Mr J. Lindsay, (Dunstan Commonage), Lit) 3s ; Mr T. Sims (Dunstan Flat), L2 Is ; Mr W. Greenbank and Messrs Read and Shepherd (Tinkers and Drybrea I), L2O 3s ; Mr H. Watson (Dunedin Road), L 9 10s ; Mr M-Giunis (Butcher’s Gully), Lll 3s ; Mr J. Pitches (Blacks), L 5; Mr D A. Jolly (Cromwell), L 4 7s; Mr Jones (Bannock burn), LI 3 10s ; Mr W. Bennett (Qnartzville), L 5 ; Mr Rivers (Alexandra), L 7 17s ; Mr Rees (Galloway), LI Is. The four unreturned lists were sent to Mr C. Colclough (Cromwell), Mr Snow (Nevis), Mr Weaver, and Mr MThail (Morven Hills). He also stated that the sum of L 27 4s had been collected at the Bendigo reefs, and 1.5 had been subscribed by the Alexandra School teachers. The total therefore from the Vincent County was LI4S ISs Gd, but the two latter sums, however, had been sent direct to the Central Committee. Mr B Naylor (Treasurer) acknowledged having received from the Secretary the sum of LUG 14s Gd. Two small accounts —advertising, 19s, and postage stamps and stationery, 5s were ordered to he paid. Resolved— “ That the Treasurer obtain a bank draft for the balance, (.115 10s Gd, and that the Secretary forward the same, with a full statement of all transactions, to the Centra! Committee, Dunedin." Resolved- •“ That the following resolution also he forwarded to the Central Committee—“ln forwarding this subscription to the Central Committee of the Kaitangata Relief Fund, the Vincent County Local Committee desire to express their opinion that the monies subscribed to the Fund should not be dissipated by the bestowal of the whole amount upon the immediate sufferers by the late calamity at the Kaitangata coal mine, but the total should be capitalised and invested as a nucleus for a general ‘Miners’ Relief and Accident Fund,’ that the interest out of such Fund should be _ applied to the temporary relief and maintenance of the widows and orphans of the men who perished by the Kaitangata explosion and for their distribution throughout the Colony ; and that the capital so invested should be retained as a fund to meet further contingencies of a similar character. ” The Chairman then said the result of the labours of the Committee was highly satisfactory, and the amount collected was highly creditable to the County, and spoke well for the liberality of the people. The meeting then separated.
