BLACKS.

—o—(Communicated.) A meeting was held in the School-room, Ophir on the evening of the 20th ultimo, tor the purpose of considering the best means of getting the price of deferred payment blocks reduced to its original amount, and the following resolutions were passed. Ist.—That in the opinion of this meeting, and having regard to the immense debt incurred by' the Colony', the settlement of the people on the land is a matter imperative.

2nd.—That the raising of the price of deferred payment land to double its former rate is not only unjust and impolitic, but will effectually prevent that settlement without which the Colony cannot hope to prosper.

3.—That a Committee be appointed to carry out such measures as it may deem advisable to effect the object of getting the price of deferred payment lands reduced to the original rate of LI 10s per acre, and with power to add to their number, the Committee to consist of the following : Messrs J. C. Chappie, Thomas Spain, William Burren, William M ‘Endow, Francis Lee, James Sloan, James Cleary, and Peter Harrington.

These resolutions were passed without dissent, and a time was then appointed by Committee to meet for the election of a Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary, and the procecdings then terminated.
