(From Exchanges.) London (undated) The fortress K ill seeguhool, the only important stronghold between British territory and Cahul. has been occupied bv the British. The Afghan garrison retired without resistance. February Ist. The sentences or. the City of Glasgow Bank directors are Potter and Stronach 18 months; and Taylor, Inglish, Wright, Salmon, and Stewart, eight months’ im prisonraent. Counsel urged that they were not guilty of false balances, as they had no motive for falsifying. Cetywayo, theZuluKing, nothaving submitted, war has been declared against him. Zulu King refused to listen to the British ultimatum, and the British troops immediaately crossed the frontier, attacking and carrying the principal outposts Owing to repeated inroads on settlements on the Guinea Coast, the Portuguese Government declared war on the hostile tribe. A strong expeditionary force is being posted out London, .Tanuary 29th. Marshal MacMahon, persisting in his refusal to change commanders, has virtually resigned. He will probably formally res : gn to-morrow. The Congress, Senate, and Chamber of Deputies will then meet and elect a successor. January 30 th. The probable candidates for the Pi e-i----dency are M. Grevy, President of the Chamber of Deputies ; and Admiral Pothuau, Minister of the Marine and Colonics. Later. Marshal MacMahon has resigned. The Senate and Chamber of Deputies were speedily convoked to electa successor. Evening. M. Grevy was elected by a large majority, and has been proclaimed President of the Republic for seven years. January 31st. The Ministry remain in office, the President refusing to accept their resignation. Marshal MacMahon retires into private life. M. Gambetta has been elected President of the Chamber of Deputies. The directors of the Glasgow Bank made no defence, they only called witnesses as to character. Potter and Stronach were found not guilty as charged. The others have been found guilty of issuing false balances, and sentence will be passed on Saturday. Bombay, January 30th. General Stewart’s cavalry entered Khilat-i-Ghizai on the 21st. Vali Mahomet, brother to the Ameer of Afghanistan, accompanied by a number of chiefs, has arrived at Kurum, and solicited General Roberts to receive him. London, February Ist. A collision is feared between Russia and Roumania, owing to frontier disputes. February 3rd. Mr Gladstone has accepted the candidacy for the representation of Midlothian, in the House of Commons. The British troops advanced into the Zulu country on the 12th ult. The advance so far has been without opposition. Paris, February 3rd. The President of the Council of Ministers has resigned. M. Dufanre also persists in resigning. M. Waddington, therefore forms a new Ministry.
