Beneath the rale of men bn'ttbulv just the res is mightier than the SWORD.
In consequence of the length of the report of the Meeting of the Vncent County Council, in which the facts are alone dealt with, we are compelled to hold over a lot of local matter, correspondence from the Lakes. a’so to withhold aome very int. treating debates from the County Council Meeting. We take (he opportunity of correcting a typographies' error which appeared in the Statement of Assets and Liabilities of (ho Clyde Building Society published in onr lest issue, the balance remaining after dp. c' >ring profits, is £3 19s 3d, and not £5 19s 3d. We have been favored with ths following from a correspondent What has bitbeitn been considered an impossibility, namely, the ascent of tbe * Old Man Hock ’ uo.s successfully accomplished last week hy t!i ■ Survey party camped at Allan’s Hill. A Survey party tried oome year or so ago, we believe, to pet a line passed over the top of the ‘ O'd Man ’ hy fireing a bal? with a line attached to it, Imt, failed. In the present ease, lonveve, a line was passe 1 over without the aid of a gun, and the Snrv-ynr and his assistant ascen led, drilled a hole in the top of ihe rock. and left a flog polo in it.. The ‘ Old Man’ consists of a solitary pillar of rock, the exact height being fifty, three feet It. is almost perpendicular, the top baa an average width o* thirteen feet, and the base an. average of from tbirtv to forty feet. The ascent, was accomplished ro'elv by the aid of ropes. There is no doubt when one stands alongside of the ‘ Old Man • he is, to speak Colonial,- -“ A Term.” '
