The Dunstan Times.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 1879.
Beneath the rule of men entirely just the pen is mightier than the sword.
The line of coaches from (J'y 'e to Palmerston, tin N-seby is now he'd by M<ssis Craig & Co , Ihese gent'emm having suereeded in obtaining the contract for the conveyance of (he Mails by that route, and on Friday last they ran their first trio, Mr Cook as it Mini noting ns Jehu as far ns Nosehy, while from there to Palmerston Mr Henry Nettlefold manipulates the ribbons. A deviation from the old ron'e is made, the coach now passing up the Dunsi an Creek, through Welshman’s and St. Barhans, instead of ns formerly co : ng direct from the White Horse Hotel past Bl.vkstone Hill Station. To the resident l of St. Bathans nnd that locality the chance doubtless will be a great convenience, but wbe.ther it. will be ns profitable to the proprietors or as convenient to the travel'in: public is another matter altogether. We however commend it, as the magnificent country embraced in the new route will be brought more under notice than it has as jet. Tbs DunsUa Creek district, posses*.
ing as it does the richest and most extensive gold deposits in the Province, the far famed Tuapeka Blue Spur not excepted, also, an unlimited area of magnificent agricultural and pastoral land surrounding it, besides valuable co.il mines, is capable of holding a large ami thriving population, yet to obtain this the district must bs better known, and we think the’line of coaches running through .will materially assist in effecting this. One great drawback to the route is the want of a bridge across the Manuherikia on the line of row' ; to a great many this statement will appear strange, as they will say there is a bridge, but strange to say it is not wide enough by about six inches to admit of the coach crossing. It is no business of ours as to who is to blame for this piece of bungling, this losing the ship for a half-pennyworth of tar, the fact remains, and this particular notice will, we hope, have the effect of having it widened.
