CROMWELL ANNUAL RACES.
The Races, which took place on Friday end Saturday last, were, aa far as the racing was concerned, a great success, and the only drawback was the weather through which a large number of people were debarred from putting in an appearance, and from the s one cause-had .to be postponed on Thursday, The various events were well contested, the entries being,good in every ca-e, .Mr Keenan’s stable,ithja jear was not so successful, Mr Taylor's Haricot being in splendid form which enabled him to carry off the principal stakes. The Handicappers did their duty well, and their efforts to give satisfaction met with general approval. The refreshment department was perfect, and was under the management of Mr Pernam, who met with sufficient supto recoup him for his outlay. The following are the results : First Day—Friday. Maiden Plate, of 25 sovs, for all horses that have never won an advertised prize of over 10 sovs. Weight for age. Distance, one mile and-a-balf. Dr Leahy’s g g Dandy, aged, 9st Rib (W. Robinson) 3 Cymbeline was backed readily for this event against the field. Time, 3min. 2secs. Hack Race, ot 10 sovs, for bona fide hacks that ha e never won an advertised prize of o/er 10 sovs.. Distance, one mile. No weight less chan 9at. Mr C. M'Kenna’s b m May Queen (Robinson) 1 Mr W. Reresford’s hj g Earnscleugh ... 2 Dr Stackpole’sb g Haivy ... ... 3 This was a gift to the Queen, she wiuning easily. Grand Stand Handicap, of 30 sovs. Distance, one mile and-k-half. Mr W. Taylor’s g g Harricot. aged, Bst I lib* (W. Barry) 1 Mr T. Keenan's ch g Gamecock, aged, 9st 81b ... ... (Gourley) 2 MrJ. Werner’s b g Bungaree, aged 7st 61b ... .. (W. Scott) 3 Gamecock was the favoritcin the betting, although some f w backed Haricot. This event was keenly contested and was won by a length. Time, 2min. 58secs. Architect Produce Stakes a sweepstake of 5 sovs each, 2 sovs forfeit, with £SO added, total value, £B9. For two-year-olds, the produce of mares covered hy Architect in the season 1875-6. Derby weights—colts, Bst 101b; fillies, Bst 51b. Distance, 5 furlongs. Mr T. Wood’s b f Periine ... (T. Barry) 1 Mr H. Partridge’s b f Paradox (G. Partridge) 2 Mr C. M'Kenna’s b f Barmaid (G. Robinson) 3 Paradox was favorite, and was freely backed. Opposite the Grand stand Perline was about half a length to the fore of Paradox when the latter horse swerved into the leading filly which was caused by the breaking o f Partridge’s stirup iron. Time, Imin. 15secs. Selling Stakes, of 20 sovs. Distance, three-quarters of a mile heats. No weicht less than 9st. Winner to lie sold for 15 sovs. Surplus, if any, to go to the Race Fund. Mr W. Barry) 22 '■ This race was keenly contested the fir*t heat being nearly a dead o"e, and the second ended by Foam being ft-head half a length. Second Day : Saturday. Flying Handicap, of 20 sovs. Distance three-quarters of a mile. Mr W. Taylor’s Boughleeu Dhnun, 6yrs 7st 3lbs (T. Barry) 1 Mr T. Keenan's Gamecock, aged, 9st 1011) ... (Richardson) 2 Mr W. Berosford’s St Vincent, aged, 7st 41b ... (W. Scott) 3 Cymbeline was the favorite, but he came in last. Time, Imiu 25secs. Shorts, of 10 sovs. For bona fid* Hacks. Distance, half-mile heats, without dismounting. No weight less than 9st. Mr I. Lou hnan’i s pey ... .. 11 Mr 0. M'Kemi ,’s May Queen ... 22 Spey won easily. Jockey Club Handicap, of 40 sovs. D!stance, two miles. Winner of Flying Handicap to carry 51h penalty. MrW. Taylor’s g g Haricot, aged Bst 121b(W. Burry) 1 Mr T. Keenan’s eh hj Freestone, Oyrs 9st 81b ... (Richardson) 2 Mr T. Keenan’s ch g Gamecock, aged 9st 61b ... (Ross) 3 Mr Keenan declared to win with Gamecock Keenan’s horses kept the lead for a mile and a half, when Barry got alongside the pair, and although Freestone tried hard to gain first honors Haricot won by a length Time, 3min Sosecs. The Hospital Pace was next on the card, and was won hy Mr M ‘Kenna’s May Queen ridden by Walter Scott. Earnscleugh and Patch also started. County Plate, ot 30 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. Mr W. Barry's Foam aged fis)4!b(Davis) 1 Dr D-ahy’s Dan ly. aged, 7st 61b ... 2 Mr W. Taylor’s Boughleen Dhoun, 6vrs 7st 61b ... ... ... 3 Three others ran. Foam proved too much for the Maiden Plater, and won by a couple of lengths. Time, 2mm. 54secs. Consolation Handicap, of 13 sovg. For all .beaten horses. Distance, one mile. MrC. M'Kenna's Clyde, aged, 7st 21b (Davis) 1 Mf W. Taylor’s France*, aged Sst 12ib 2 Mr J. Werner’s Bungaree, aged, 7st 101b 3 This race was a complete boil-over, Frances being the fancied ona.
