The Timaru Herald says:—“ Two other vacancies may shortly bt look oil for, as we hj ve reason to believe that Mr Dignan, member for Anckbn 1 City West, and Mr Woo l, member for Mataura, are to be elevated to the Upper House.” Mr H. Manders, M.H. R. for the Lakis has addressed his constituents at Queenstown and Arrow town. At Queenstown ho received a combine 1 vote of thanks and confidence ; at Arrnwtown, a vote of th 'iiks was unanimously carried.
The We'lington Chronicle affirms that the next Session of Parliament will not be held at Christchurch, saying, no vote having been taken the Government decline to take the responsibility of the expenditure on their own shoulders.

The agitators for land in this district will not have much longer to wait for their wants to be satisfied. We are informed, on the best authority, that Messrs. Craig and Co., are the successful tenderers for carrying the mails by the following routes, viz., Dunedin to Clyde via Palmerston ; Lawrence to Queenstown via C ydo ; and Lawrence to Tapanui. A Sdney telegram ot the 9th instant says that Sir Hercules Hohiuson has been offered and will accept the Governorship of New Zealand.
It is rumoured tliat Sir J. Fitzherhert will be made Speaker of the Legislative Council, and Mr O’Rorke Speaker of the House of Representatives. A merchant in Wellington has received a telegram informing him that Cameron’s tobacco factory at Petersburgh, Virginia, U.S., has been destroyed by lire. Perkins, the Sydney wire-rope walker, attempted the feat of walking twelve miles on a wire rope in ten horns at Bathurst, and accomplished eleven miles in that time. His feet were severely Idisterel. A movement, arising out of the Chinese difficulty at Sydney, has been set on font at Wellington, and a petition is in the course of signature, praying the Government to have an Act parsed imposing a poll tax upon all Chinese arriving in New Zealand as sailors or labourers, and making captains of vessels responsible for the introduction of Chin :se.
In Denmark there is a special school, where girls are instructed in all the duties of dairy management and accounts. The fee is 35f per month, and a diploma for a pupil is tantamount to a fortune. A paper carpet is now made in England designed to imitate parquet flooring, the paper being printed in patterns to lesemble different woods from photographs The crcvicoi are tillol with plaster of Paris, and the whole coated with durable varnish.
The wrestling match betwe.n J. Tyson and J. Thomas Ins been fixed to come off on the Caledonian Grounds on Saturday next, 14th inst., instead of the 18th. The final deposits have been paid. Prince Albert William Henry of Germany, t ie second son of Prince Frederick William, heir-apparent to the German throne, will be one of the visitors to the Melbourne International Exhibition. Prince Henry is the second son of the Prim; ss Royal of England, and is therefore a grandson of Her Maj s'y the Queen. He is serving in the Impeiial Navy, and will visit the port with his vessel.
A series of interesting experiments were made in Sydney harbour with a new explosive compound, the invention of Captain Wagemann, of the German Imperial Engineers. He intends placing it before the Colonial Governments. The compound will not explode by concussion, but only by a fuse made by the inventor. It is claimed to be much more powerful than either gun cotton or dynamite. The experiments were successful.
Tenders for the first section of the Strath* Taieri Railway, viz , from the Mosgiel Junction to Mullocky Gully, a-e shortly to ho called. The survey is complete we understand. the whole distance to Hyde ; from there to Lander Creek Gorge it is in progress ; and from the Gorge it is completed to the junction of the Chatto Creek with the
Manuherikia. The party are still busily encaged on the work, it will, therefore, not he long before the survey will he completed t > the hanks of the Molyneux. By latest Australian advices wo learn that at Back Crei k, a butcher’s hoy, whi'o driving some sheep, saw something glittering in the centre of the street, which on examination turned out to he a quantity of
nuggetty gold. The boy at once began to gather up the treasure, but whilst doing so his sheep strayed away, and he went after them, but before leaving he managed to secure as much gold as would fill his two hands hel l together. Some other hoys were attracted to the spot, and two of them sesecured over Db weight of gold before they left ; whilst 9 or 10 more hoys participated in the find. The gold had probably been in the ground upwards of 20 years, and planted there by some digger in the old times, as close to the hole from which the gold was obtained is another hole, which has ad the appearance of having boon used f or the pst of a tent. The boys cleaned the hole—which is only about twelve inches in circumference -out to about a depth "f nine inch s, and it is estimated that at least 41h weight of gold was obtained from it. No doubt tho recent rains have washed the loose soil from the top, and thus disclosed the bidden treasure.
