CRICKET MATCH.

—o— DUNSTAN DISTRICT v. CROMWELL. This match came off on Saturday last the 30th ultimo, resulting in a victory for the Duustan team. The day was everything to be desired, being beautifully calm, and though the sun was obscured it wus sufficiently warm to be comfortable. The ground was. in excellent condition, the pitches being simply perfect, and as the best of good fellowship and good humor was displayed throughout, not a cross look or word passing (excepting perhaps a deepbreathed blessing on the Umpire for his decision, but who is philosopher enough to bear the dreaded sentence without a sigh), the day was most enjoyable, and we think there were not many present but who would wish that before the season is spent a few more such jolly day's may be provided- A good deal of interest was displayed in the game, as evidenced by the large attendance of visitors, from the commencement till its close; the ladies particularly in force, adding greatly to the charm of an already pretty scene. Ail the preliminaries being arranged by half- past eleven, and Cromwell having won the toss, they decided to send their opponents to the wicket?. Mr Loudon, Captain of the Cromwell team led his men into the field, and on taking their positions, Mr Stevens, the Captain of the Duustan team sent the brothers Leahy to the wickets. We will not attempt to particularise the game, as the scores below suggest there was nothing of particular interest in it, excepting the very effective bowling of Maddock, until Clark went in and made it rather lively, playing a pretty game of 2S, and not out, bringing up the total to 71. The Cromwell team then went in and finished their innings for 60 ; of this, Maddock and Loudon contributed 19 and 11 respectively, Clark and M. Leahy' bowling throughout. After a refresher in the shape of a sandwich and a glass of beer, the Dnnstan team went in for their second innings and raised up a total of 04, of which again Clark contributed the handsome Dumber of 35. Cromwell then with 73 to win went in, but the fates were not propitious, as with a total of 47, and with a deficit of 27 the last man was out. With the exception of Clark but little good batting was displayed—the fact must be admitted, the bowling on both sides was too good, but as the same good feotnre existed on either side neither have much cause to complain. On the return match, which we hope to witness, we shall be but little surprised at the tables being turned, and the Cromwell team making it game and game. The game being couclulel three cheers were given all round, and as we said before, a really pleasant day’s amusement was brought to a close. The scores are appended. Dunstan District.—First Innings.
