CROMWELL BOROUGH ELECTION.

[ H r e do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.]

(to the editor of the DUNSTAN/TIMES.) Sir : —The decision given by the R. M. in the matter of the petition to oust Councillors Scott and Aitken from the Borough Council has given general satisfaction, if we except those individuals signing something they did not understand, and are wroth to find themselves looking foolish by their otfn action. The bulk of the ratepayers regarded the action taken as being the outcome of malice and egotism, based upon selfishness to the total exclusion of any putdic good likely to accrue in the event of the petition being sustained. The Magistrate’s decision proves conclusively that a little learning is a dangerous thing, and that if there is one individual more dangerous than another, he is a bontling lawyer eager to try his wing, the more so, if possessed of an amount of persuasive powers sufficient to persuade ignorant individuals to make common cause with him. However,, I think the voice of the charmer is lost,, charm he never so wisely. One individual of the Borcugh Council is threatened under the Disability Clauses of 1876 Act —not being rich enough is in future to be regarded as contra to law. Truly, the practical working of the new Acts are anomalous ; a Miner’s Right is a qualification for a County Councillor, a carpet-hag for a M.H.R., but an honor divided in nine requires that a qualification of L 25 a year is necessary in a little one-horse township like Cromwell. So much lor the wisdom of recent legislation and its anomalies.—Yours, etc., Publico. Cromwell, October 16, 1878.
