THE FORESTERS’ BALL.
—o— The Anniversary Ball of Conrl Star of the Duustan, A.0.F., was held on Wednesday evening last, in the Town Hall, Clyde. This Ball will long he remembered as the most enjoyable one that our friends the Foresters have given, not only for the magnificent display, but for the sociability which was evinced on the occasion. The preliminary music outside the Hall was executed in grand style by the Alexandra Brass Band, and the call was heartily responded to by some thirty couples of as well dressed and respectable a class of society as it has been our lot to witness assemble to while away a few hours in “tripping the light fantastic toe.” The programme, which consisted ot twenty-four dances, was gone through as smoothly as “ the peals of a marriage bell.” Amongst the company assembled we noticed some twenty persons from Alexandra, two from Cromwell, and some forty residents of Clyde and neighborhood. The cry of “ Who is the Belle of the Ball,” we could not answer, for the ladies on this occasion seemed determined to excel one another in every respect, and therefore left the problem unsolved. The refreshments, which were supplied by Mr Bell, consisted ot so many dainties that one hardly knew what to choose, and wo must congratulate the caterer on his ability, ns everyone considered this spread superseded all previous ones of a like nature. The hall was well decorated and lit up by Mr T, Webb, who intioduced amongst the evergreens, ferns, and flags a number of excellent mottos in silver and gold. We have been requested to thank the Band both on behalf of the Foresters and visitors, and we can truly say that we never heard them to so great advantage, and they have earned a good name for the able and kind manner they have assisted on this occasion. Mr W. Hastie, in his usual efficient style performed the duties of M.C. The Ball broke up at about half-past four on Thursday morning, everyone giving expressions of satisfaction.
Those attending the Foresters’ Ball on Wednesday evening, while enjoying themselves, were mindful of the juvenile members of society, and initiated a movement for giving them a treat on the following evening by opening up a subscription list. On the following afternoon tho list was again taken in hand, and by the time all had been called upon, a sum sufficient was collected to more than cover any possible expense. Accordingly a general invitation was given, and though a disagreeable mizzling rain fell throughout the afternoon and evening a good 100 responded and put in an appearance. Asa matter of course, feasting led off the fun, afterwards dancing, foifeits, and other juvenile amusements were indulged till nearly 9 o’clock, when all cleared away homeward, thoroughly pleased with the treat given them. Mr MaeGeorge and Mr Ilotop most kindly supplied tho music, one playing on the harmonium the other on the violin.
