The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 1878.

Beneath the rule of men entirely just the pen is mightier than the SWORD.

A Public Meeting was held in Cromwell on Tuesday evening last, stjwhich Mr Pyke M.H.R. was announced to he present, “ to consider the propriety of co-operating with the Westland Railway Committee in urging the construction of a line of Railway to tho West Coast, by the way of Haast Pass.” We did not hear tho result of the meeting, or in fact, whether a meeting was held, but we really hope if any thing was done, that the meeting pressed upon Mr Pyko to abandon for the time being tho West Coast lino, and to devote his entire attention to that, by way of Strathtaieri. Nothing can be more evident than that tho prosperity, not alono of the Dunstan district, but of the entire up-country districts, depends upon the Strathtaieri line, and we hold that until that lino is fairly commenced, and can be looked upon as an ascertained fact, the laying out of a single shilling on any other line or even the devoting of a thought away from it by our member, Mr Pyke, should be looked upon and treated ns an abnegation of duty. The opening up of the West Coast by means of a railway is chimerical, and we would strongly nrgo upon Mr Pyko’s constituency to plainly draw his attention to the fact, that their interests and his own included would bo better served, by devoting his energies to a scheme that promises so universal a benefit as does the Strathtaieri line, rather than follow up any pet idea.
