Txtr. newly elected Committee of the Clyde Library, since they have been in ofiiee have wrought a most radical change in that Institution, and we can only say that if it is not more patronised than formerly, the next step that should bo taken would ho to shut it up. Thoißeading-room, which is at tho present time the Library, has been entirely rehabilitated, the floor is covered with cocoa nut matting, fender and lire irons and coal

scuttle have been substituted for the cumbersome coal-box and dirty hearth, cano arm chairs take the place of the common portable wooden forms ; a very handsome glazed case, with a number of specimens of New Zealand minerals and ores, occupies a prominent position; the walls are decorated with maps and pictures, all the papers are filed—the illustrated ones being placed in covers—and the Books aro all arranged unthe various headings—Travels, History, Biography, Poetry, Fiction, Reference, &c., so that at a glance any class of book can be obtained. An air of comfort pervades the place, and we reiterate, if is to he hoped the public will shew their appreciation by liberally supporting it. One of the first acta of the Committee was to take steps to register the Library under the “Public Libraries’ Powers Act,” under which the public have free ingress, with right to read the papers and books, but not to take anything out, subscribers alone having that privilege, hut as the membership fees are reasonable, the annual fee being 20s, half yearly 10s 6d and quarterly Cs, there are but few who cannot afford to become members, and thus entitled to all the privileges. The hours on which the door is open are from 3to 5, and 7 to 10 p.rn.
