In addition to the above-mentioned salarv of LSOOO, the Governor of New Zealand is, by the Civil List Amendment Act of 1873, allowed an annual sura of L 1.700 in lieu of payment of salaries and expenses of his establishment—this is termed “establishment allowance.” There is also another sum of LIOOO fixed by the same Act as an allowance in lieu of travelling expenses of the Governor, and hia family, officers, and servants—and this is termed “ travelling allowance,” The full amount of the salary and allowances is thus L 7500. These allowances for the other Governors enumerated in the foregoing list are, of course, not included in the sums specified ; and in some at least of the colonies are made the subject of an annual vote, as was the practice here up to 1873, prior to which the details of trilling expenses connected with Sir George Bowen’s household economy, from the repairs |of a groom’s livery to the price of a new cradle, or a requisition for bed and table linen, caused occasional debates of such an inquisitorial nature into domestic affairs that it was deemed desirable to prevent their recurrence by adding to the Civil List certain sums for establishment and travelling expenses.
