Beneath the rule of men entirely .tost the I’F.N is mightier than the. SWORD.
. The railway to Waikouaiti was opened to general trailic on Monday last. The through line to Palmerston is expected to be completed in two months. Mr Marie, of Cooper’s Gully Coal Mine again announces that he is prepared to supply consumers of coal with the best coal to be obtained in the District at current rates. Some weeks since we officially heard of the surveyors of the Strathtaieri line of railway having reached the Poolhurn Gorge. Since then, however, wo have not heard of their progress, except that rumour tells us that the party are constantly at work and are making good headway. From tho dictum of the officers of H. M. Ship Wolverine, now lying at Auckland, persons flying the “ ensign” arn liable to a penalty of 1.500 It appears the officers went to an auction mart, over which the ensign was flying, and warned the owners of the result, and tho flag was at once lowered. An officer, however, most graciously said that the flag might bo used if it was slightly altered. The Duustan Cricket Club announces by advertisement a Concert on Thursday, the 23rd instant. From the well-known ability of several members of the Club, and the support they will he sure to receive from all the talent in the district, a musical treat, vocal and instrumental, may ho expected. On the following day the Gun Club will have a match, and on the next dav tho next day the Cricketing season will be brought to a close with a match [Squatters v. District. A grate want.— Coal.
We regret to record the death of Mr C. Morris, of the firm of Finlay and Morris, Alexandra which took place on Wednesday morning last. Deceased had been suffering from pulmonary disease for some time, his death was therefore not unexpected, though greatly deplored by a large circle of friends whose esteem he had won by his kindliness of disposition and honesty of purpose. Deceased leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss ; they, however, are provided for, as besides the interest in the business, they are entitled to LCOO, the sum deceased’s life was insured for. On Saturday last Mr C. A. De Lautour, of Nasehy, part proprietor and editor of the Mount Ida Chronicle, was publicly presented with a purse of 135 sovereigns and an address. Mr Do Lautour has disposed of his interest in the Chronicle, and from what we can understand purposes studying tho law under a leading barrister in the North Island, at the same time holding his seat in the House of Representatives for the district of Maniototo. Mr W. H. Ash. long connected with the Chronicle, is the purchaser of Mr De Lautour’s interest. The following account of the fatal fire that occurred at Kingston on Sunday morning last, we take from the Dunedin Evening Star : —“ The sad news was brought in here yesterday afternoon of the total destruction by fire that morning, at half-past five o’clock, of Kerr’s Lake Hotel and Anderson’s Railway Hotel, and the loss of three lives, besides four or five men being seriouslyinjured in escaping from Kerr’s upper bed" rooras. Two of the men burned to death were railway navvies, and tho other a traveller. Their remains are scarcely recognisable. The fire originated in the upper bedroom of Kerr’s house through, as it is reported, a drunken man. The wind soon blew the flames to Anderson’s hotel, which was about 40ft. distant. Both were wooden buildings, and were burnt down quickly. Anderson saved some of his furniture, but Kerr saved nothing, Auder“on’s loss is heavy-, the building costing L 1.200. Anderson was insured for LSOO in the New Zealand and National Companies, and Kerr for LCOO. John Docherty and 11. M‘Cann were two of the men burned.” Throat Affections and Hoarseness. - All suffering from irritation of the throat and hoarseness will be agreeably surprised at tbe almost immediate relief afforded by tho use of “Brown’s Bronchial Troches.” these famous “ lozenges” are now sold by most respectable chemists in this country at Is 14<d per box. People troubled with a “hacking cough,” a “slight cold,” or bronchial affections, cannot try them too soon as similar troubles, if allowed to progress result in serious Pulmonary and Asthmatic affections. See that the words ‘' Brown’s Bronchial Troches ” are on the Government Stamp around each box. —Manufactured by John I. Brown & Sons, Boston, United States. Depot, 493, Oxford-street, London Holloway’s Ointment and Pills.— Fear not.—Though surrounded by- circumstances disadvantageous to health, these remedies, properly applied, will cut short fevers, influenza, inflammation, diphtheria, and a host of other complaints always lurking about to seize on the weak, forlorn, or unwary. The superiority of Holloway’s Medicines over others for subduing disease has been so widely and fully proved that it is only necessary to ask the alllicted to give them a trial, and if the instructions folded round them be followed, no disappointment will ever ensue, nor dangerous consequences result. In hoarseness and ulcerated sore throat the Ointment should frequently be rubbed'on the neck and upper part of the chest ; it will arrest the increasing inflammation, allay disquietude, and gradually cure.
