The Dunstan Times.
FRIDAY, MAY 3, 1878.
Beneath the rule of men entirely just the pen is mightier than the sword.
The Bazaar and Gift Auction to be beld in the Town Hall to-morrow, in aid of the Dunstan District Hospital, promises to be a grand success. Donors have been very liberal, and the only other thing wanted to complete the success will be buyers. Among the gifts are a cow, a horse, 20 sheep, a heifer, a calf, several pigs, 4 pairs of guineahens, and an unlimited number of geese, turkeys, and fowls, of these a portion are to be killed and dressed ready for the oven, so that we should strongly (though in so doing we are acting against our very dear friends the butchers) advise all and sundry to put off the purchase of their Sunday’s dinner till after the sale. There are, besides, oats, potatoes, fruit, tons of coals, the right to have a horse shod, confectionery, wines, spirits, books, pictures, and the thousand and one useful and ornamental little knicknacks (presents from our lady friends) only to be found at bazaars. From the above it will be seen that any lady or gentleman will be very hard indeed to please if, among the multiplicity of articles, they cannot find a something to suit either their taste or fancy. Wo therefore must advise every one to put in an appearance. It has been rumoured that a charge is to be made [for admission, we are requested to correct this, as the room when opened will be free to all. The Clyde Brass Band has kindly consented to give a selection of music during the afternoon and evening, and we are given to understand that several ladies and gentlemen have kindly consented to diversify the proceediugs and give some vocal and instrumental music. The affair, consequently, will bear more the character of a world’s fair than a bazaar, in the general acceptation of the term, and must of a necessity prove a welcome change to the customary monotony of an up-country life. The doors will be opened at three in the afternoon.
