WASTELANDS BOARD.

At the' Sitting of the above held ou Wed nesday, April 10th, the following transpired : . Mr'Baatiugs called the attention of the Board to the matter of advertising land sales. He wanted to know how it was they were not advertised iu up-couutry papers.

The Chief Commissioner'stated that an abstract of all Crown land sales was published in the paper iu the district in which the sales took place. Mr Bastings replied that ihhad not been done at Tuapeka.

The Chief Commissioner £said fhe was sorry to have to contradict hir ’ Bastings been sent up to insert an nouncements iu one of.the local.papers during the past mouth.

Mr Bastings said ho was complaining of the ■whole system. The announcements were so [small that it would require a magnifying glass to see them. He thought it was false economy on the'part of the Government. If any private individual wanted to sell his estate, he would take care to give it a very different amount of publicity. The Chief Commissioner replied that the Board were not warrantedjin incurring too large an expenditure. ■ Mr Bastings said it was saving at the spiggot and letting out at the bunghole. He considered legitimate publicity ought to be given to important announcements respecting public property. The Chief Commissioner said he would be glad to receive any suggestions that might be’given on the subject. At present an abstract of sales was published in the up-country papers. Mr Bastings said they were such that people did not read, or could not understand.

The Chief Commissioner replied that the advertisements were published in the Otago Daily Times.

Mr Thomson : Then, if you want to understand the abstracts, you have to consult the Dai’y Times ! The Chief Commissioner said the information could he obtained at the Land Office.

Mr Thomson understood that the Times had not a great circulation in the upcountry districts ; it was the Witness that had the circulation.

After further discussion, the matter dropped, without anything definite being come to.
