CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting washeldin the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening last. Present—S. Welsford, Esq. (Mayor) and Crs Auckland, Heck, Cox, Clark and M ‘Connochie.
The minutes of the previous monthly mecti 'g and of a special meeting were read ■and confirmed.
The outward correspondence was read ■and adopted.
The inward correspondence, including the following, wore read and received From the Colonial Treasury, to effect that deductions from subsidy 011 account of hospitals would have to be made, but that if the Cor poration took charge of the Hospitals, such deductions would be returned together with one pound for every one pound raised by subscriptions or otherwise on account of the Hospital ; from 'tike Thames Borough Conuoil, suggesting the forming of a Municipal T<eaguo for the purpose of securing combined action on -all matters affecting municipal bodies, and that one or more members or the Secretary to the League should remain at Wellington during each sess'on of Parliament, to genen lly watch over municipal interests and to report; from F. ,5, Wilson, notifying that the Warden's decision, declaring Corporation water rights abandoned, in tifae appeal to the District Court in the case Feraud v. the Corporation was upheld, the Court holding that the water being diverted from the original channel was evidence of abandonment, and that Mr Feraadhad never been elected a Councillor, the form gone through being simply void. The circular letter from the Treasury was ordered to stand over. The Mayor said he fully concurred in the desirability of a league, such as referred to in the letter from the Thames Borough, but did not think Clyde could afford to send a representative. Others of the Council expressing similar views, it was resolved—That the Town Clerk write the Thames Borough accordingly.
Over the letter from Mr Wilson a deal of recrimination ensued, the Mayor accusing some of the Council of being the means of losing the water right, they in turn laying the blame on the Mayor. The Mayor said ho thought there was an appeal against the decision of the District Court. The matter, however, was allowed to drop. Resolved—That the extraordinary vacancy in the Council through the ruling of the District Court that Mr Feraud never having been elected a Councillor, be tilled up, and that the Town Clerk take the necessary steps to advertise, Are. Resolved—That Cr Auckland be Returning Officer on the occasion. Resolved—That this Council agree to terms and conditions embodied in memorial re merger to be presented to His Excellency the Governor by the Vincent County Council and the Clyde Town Council jointly.
The Town Clerk was instructed to initiate steps to procure the iMOO aero reserve for the Town under the Municipal Corporations Act, IS7G. Accounts amounting to LGO 4s -id were parsed for payment.
A vote of thanks to the chair terminated th« proceedings.
