COUNTY CRICKET MATCH.

Maniototo v. Vincent. The fires County match ever played in Otago (if not in all Now Zealand) came off on Saturday last, March 23, at Lauder Station, the homestead o£ .1. Handyside, Esq., between representative teams of Vincent and Maniototo Counties. The majority of the Vincent eleven were members of the Dunstan District Club. As will be seen by the scores the Maniototo men were overmatched, although they have some very good players among them and one or two promising colts. The day was faultless —not a cloud to cast a shadow, not a breeze to interfere with the direction of a ball; the most fastidious cricketer could not have found anything to say against the clerk of the weather. A considerable number of visitors, including a goodly sprinkling of tho fair sex, assembled to witness the play. The natural position, of the ground (it being on the side of a hill) and the rough state of the turf told against tho scores, which would certaiuly have been 25 percent, more on a good ground. While speaking of the ground, too much praise cannot be given to Mr Handyside for the very great trouble he must have taken to obtain such an excellent pitch. The match was begun.about eleven o’clock, by Mr Handyside, the captain of the.Maniototo team, sending his opponents to the wickets. About one o’clock an adjournment was made for luncheon, which was set out in a spacious marquee, on the ground. About thirty gentlemen sat down to tables literally groaning with good things, and for the space of nearly half-an-hour little was heard but the clattering of knives and the popping of corks. Mr W. G. Rees, captain of the Vincent eleven, then rose, and in appropriate words proposed the health of “Our Host, Mr Handyside,” which was drunk enthusiastically with throe times three. Flay was then resumed, and when time was called (six o'clock) the Maniototo had lost in the second innings live wickets for twenty-five runs. Thus ended, what, thanks to the generous hospitality of Mr Handyside, proved most enjoyable to all concerned, and what, we sincerely trust, will henceforth be an institution of the country—the first County match between Vincent and Maniototo. We must here mention that Messrs Henry and Robert Holland performed the unthankful offices of umpires, and for the very efficient manner in which they performed their duties the thanks of the players are hereby tendered.
