Contractors will flo well to remember that tenders for maintaining the roads in the County will close on Wednesday next the 27th instant at noon. Mr Police Commissioner Weldon paid a visit to Clyde on Saturday evening last, taking his departure again on the Monday morning by way of Mount Ida. The Eev. A. G. Boyd preaches in the School-house, Clyde, on Sunday evening next, for the last time prior to his departure from the district. The incorporating of Mining Claims and Water-races into Companies under the “ Mining Companic’ Act,” appears just now to be the fashion, and to our mind a very wise one. The Pyke Testimonial Committee request us to state that those who wish to bo present on the occasion of the presentation should be punctual in putting ir an appearance at the advertised time, and to accept this as sufficient intimation. Immediately after the ceremony of throwing open to free traffic of the Clyde Bridge, a mob of sheep numbering in all some 2000 were passed over. They were the property of a gentleman named M‘Arthur, of the Mataura, and had been purchased by him from off the Matakanui Station. On reaching the West-bank of the Molvneux they joined another mob of 2000 purchased by the same gentleman from off the Hawksbum Station. Fi.omi.TKE ! The resignation of the Kev. Mr Boyd, of i Alexandra, was to have been considered by the Presbytery on Wednesday last: The judgment of the Court to tho plea of ! justification in the libel case “Whittaker v. i Jones,” (Oamaru Evening Mail) is that jus- 1 tification cannot be pleaded. I A meeting of the Pyko Testimonial Committee will be held at Alexandra on Saturday evening next, to receive the subscription lists and make arrangements for the presentation. We are requested to draw the attention of holders of subscription lists to the fact, and ask them to send or hand in their lists to Mr Odell, the Secretary of the Committee, before 8 p.m, on Saturday evening. The “ Consultation Case,” a charge against a Mr Cameron, Dunedin, for a breach ot the “ Lotteries Act,” in instituting a sweep on the Dunedin Cup was dismissed, there being no evidence that the defendant was beneficially interested in the sweep. The Dunedin Star gives currency to the following ?On die that the Government have intimated in very plain terms to Sir .1. Vogel that the expenses of the Agent-gene-ral’s department. In certain circles the impression is now pretty general that Sir Julius will resign, and be succeeded by Mr Header Wood. The first County Match will be played tomorrow (Saturday) at Mr Handyside’s Lauder Station, between the Counties of Manictoto and Vincent, This is expected will be a very closely contested game. The eleven for Vincent will be selected from the following Messrs. Rees, Sweet, Sams, Williams, Shaw, Stevens, Denniston, Clark, Jones, Hamson, Ratcliffe, Tobin, Mackellar, Bothomley. A number of treat supplied by the Acclimitization Society, for distribution in the Blacks district, arrived by coach on Wednesday morning last at Clyde—they were at once conveyed to Blacks, and on arrival, Mr E. de B. Campbell, Manager of the Bank of tho Bank of New South Wales liberated them in the right-hand branch of theSpottis Creek. The fish were apparently in good health, and immediately on being freed, made headway against the stream. The Stream wherein the fish are liberated, though shallow, in every other respect, is well suited for trout. The Chatto Creek is also a good stream, and an effort should be made to get some fish for it. The chances of this mortal life (says a home journal) are many and strange. In one of the English counties a certain wealthy squire owning large estates, who professed the Roman Catholic faith, married a Protestant lady, very much to the dissatisfaction of his friends and co-religionists. But his property was strictly entailed in tho male line, and after some years four daughters only were horn of the union. Suddenly tho squire died, and his wealth went away from his own belongings to the next heir male. The widow was not oven alj lowed tho custody of her daughters, who 1 were of her own faith, and she was perhaps 1 a little hardly used by her husband’s rela- | tives and friends. Suddenly and unexi pectodly tho whole situation was changed j by tbe birth of a posthumous son. | The “ k Sonth!and Times ” relates the fol- ■ lowing amusing instance ot impudent ser-vant-galism in the Colonies, and which is I told of a new chum who had engaged as 1 servant in a family “If you please, mam, I wish to give warning. “ Mistress ; “Why “ you have only been with us a week !” Bridget —“ Well, mam, i don’t wish to stop any longer. I have been to very high folks at home, and I am given to understand, mam, that before you were married to this genteman of yours, you was just a servant yourself in this town, and if I stop here it will spoil my chance to get a place where there is a real lady.” What could the mistress do under the circumstances hut : subside, and dispose with the services of such a priceless assistant. We learn with unfeigned regret that our esteemed fellow Citizen, Mr A, J. Denniston is about to leave us having received orders to proceed to Gislxirne, Poverty Bay district, in Cook County—while we must congratulate him upon his promotion, as we understand he has obtained the Management of this branch, we cannot do otherwise than repeat our regrettedness at his departure, for in him we lose one who was ever foremost for tho prosperity and wellbeing of the district where he has been lo" cated, including Blacks and Clyde for the past thirteen years. No public movement was originated without the interference of Mr Demuston—no Institution was established without his aid and assistance ; always to the front—from lively to severe—whether fun or grave public matters our friend was to the front; in him the Cricket Club will lose one of its most active members ;in him the School Committee will lose an ardent supporter, and the district a sure friend. We cannot say more than to wish Mr Denniston a fervent God speed, and to hope that his carter in tbe community that receives him will bo as appreciative as the one that now bids him farewell Valuable Discovery fob the Hair.— If your hair is turning grey nr white, or falling off. use tbe Mexican Hair Rcnewer,” or it wi 'l positively restore in every case Grey, or White hair to its original color, without leaving the disagreeable smell of most “ Restorers.” It makes the hair charmingly beautiful, as well as promoting the growth of the hair on bald spots, where the glands are not decayed. The State trial was brought to a con* elusion shortly after seven o’clock last night, when the Jury, after a short retirement, returned a verdict of “ Not guilty,” in the case Mr George Jones, of the Oara&ru Mail, charged with libel against Mr F. A. Whitaker. No witnesses were called for the defence. A verdict, equivalent to one of Wilful Murder, was yesterday returned against Mrs De Costa, oETimaru, at the conclusion of the enquiry regarding the death of the child whose body was found in a soap-box at Blueskin on Saturday, March 2nd. Mrs De Costa, it will be remembered, admitted at the previous day’s sitting of the enquiry that she was the mother of the child. As will be seen by our report of yesterday's proceedings, Mr Denniston, on behalf of Mrs De Costa, asked that she should be admitted to bail, but the Coroner upon consideration refused to grant the request. Mr# De Costa, therefore, now remains a prisoner in Dunedin Gaol, awaiting trial at the present session of Supreme Court. We take the following from a London paper Our friends across the channel have lately revived a notion which has periodically cropped up for the last forty years—the employment of glass for making types. Since the invention of the process for toughening glass, experiments have been made in Paris by Messrs Dumas and Montcharmont, with a view to founding letters in this new material, and, though only amatenrs, these gentlemen have, according to the Patrie, achieved considerable success. It is claimed that fine linos can be cast with greater truth and sharpness in glass than in metal, and, as will be generally admitted, that the former substance is much more durable than the latter. What is certainly in its favor is that it can he cast in the ordinary moulds and with the ordinary machines. An accident of a very serious nature occurred (says the Oamaru Mail) at Waiareka, to a man named William M'Bride, in the employ of Mr Duncan. The unfortunate man was attending a threshing machine, and through some unexplained cause his left arm got caught in the machine, and became completely destroyed. He was speedily attended by Dr Garland, who bad him removed to the Oamaru Hospital, and was received into that institution. The injuries were of so severe a nature that amputation was rendered necessary. Dr Garland, assisted by Mr Edwards, chemist, performed the operation, successfully amputating the, arm at the shoulder joint. The upper portion of the shoulder was also considerably injured, and the result of the accident is still a matter of doubt, though, at the time of our receiving the latest information, the poor fellow was doing very well. We are informed (says the Tuapeka Times) that no fewer than 16 carriers have signed a document binding themselves, a* soon as the wool season is done, to go direct to Dunedin for loading. , The reasons they ! give for adopting this extreme course arc said to bo—first, the delay they are subjected to by the railway in the transit of goods ; and second, the high price charged for packages ranging between 601b. and 2owt., all of which arc charged at the 2cwt. i rate—that is to say, a parcel weighing 501b, ; would be charged as, much as one weighing ; 2owt. We regret very much that tho car- : riers have found it necessary to take th : s ! action ; at the same time we do not think they would have done so had they not had a very strong grievance. We trust Mr Grant will make inquiry into this matter. We are told that already some of the waggoners have gone to town for 'heir loading. Throat Affections and Hoarseness. - All suffering from irritation of the thro&t and hoarseness will be agreeably surprised at the almost immediate relief afforded by the use of “Brown’s Bronchial Troches." these famous “lozenges” arc now sold by most respectable chemists in this country at Is lid per box. People troubled with a “ hacking cough,” a “slight cold," or bronchial affections, cannot try them too soon as similar troubles, if allowed to progress result in serious Pulmonary and Asthmatic affections. See that the words •' Brown's Bronchial Troches ” are on the Government Stamp around each box. —Manufactured by John I. Brown & Sons, Boston, United States. Depot, 493, Oxford-street, London
