ALEXANDRA SCHOOL.
— o — annual meeting of householders for the election of a School Committee under the New Act, took place in the Alexandra School-hbuao on Monday last. The attendance was large, and all present evinced a lively interest in the proceedings.. ' "Mr Robert Finlay was voted to the Chair and opened the proceedings by reading tho portion of the : Act relating to th.e elections, arid called upon'Mr Rivers, the Secretary •dd ibn retiring Committee, who read the following report ■ ■ “In retiring from Office your Committee beg to submit their Annual report and Balance sheet for the post session. We took office with a balance in-band of amounting toLVISsSL The receipts amount to L 127 8s 9d, L 35 of which was received as Subsidy from the Education Board on monies expended daring the session of 1576; L 33 6s fid as two-thirds subsidy on an estimated sum for new desks, forms and galleries on a plan recommended by the Government Inspector, Mr Petrie, and Lls 13s 0d a donation from the Gollen Stream Lodge 1.0. G.T. The cost b! the alterations in the School, with some extras, has exceeded the estimated amhuht by some L3O, which with other sums paid by your "Committee, amounting to L2O, make a total of LSO, on which sum your Committee recommend their successors to apply to'the Education Board for tho usual subsidy. Your Committee have also expended the sum of LS 11s in prizes, and LlO as a bonus to Mr F. O. Odell given in response to an application made by that gentleman for an increase in salary. The request being made near the close of the session your Committee granted.the bonus as a . mark of their appreciation of the energy and ability displayed by Mr Odell, a;.d which ca-sd a largo increase in tho attendance. Your Committee farther resolved to recommend the application of Mr Odell to the favorable consideration of their successors. .Tho.present balance in the bank amounts . to only 10s 2J, and tho Committee is still - indebted: tb Mr Eateliffo in the-sum of ; J>4s IVs fid,,-which is the* only- unpaid', account. ■ ' C ■ ■ '• : The : Vevehrth receivable from School fees ■ wfmld have 'been much larger only for the School ’being" closed Without a "master through the resignation of Mr Goulcling, anH from which cause tho fees received for the first four months of the year amounted to only L 4 12s 7d. Four Committee have to exp-ess their regret that" the Sjhool fees have not been paid, up regularly, "or the long standing accounts collected, but"trust that parents will assist to place their successors in a bettor financi-. al condition by paying up arrears as soon as possible. The average attendance for the last nine months of the year was 78, and tlie number of scholar? on the roll who attended during the December quarter was 99, showing an average' daily attendance for that quarter of 82. ; Your Committee would recommend to thuir successors tho urgent necessity for endeavoring to obtain from the Education Board a special grant to enable them to build an Additional school-room for the junior daises, the present space being totally inadequate to the requirements of tho pupils under Miss Goulcling’s tuition, and the attendance being steadily increasing. In conclusion yoftr Committee have to congratulate you on the marked increase in the a'tendsnoe, arid hope that in conducting the School under the provisions of tho new Act, their successors will be able, to continue to advance the prosp"rity of the School. M. M'Donald, A. Cameron-, J. Allan, and J. Brown. A vote of thanks to the retiring Committee and to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
