Beneath the rule of men Entirely just the PEN' is mightier than the SWORD.
In another column we publish for general information the notices of motion to he considered at the next meeting of Vincent County Council, to take place on Wednesday next. Amongst these motions it will be seen there is one in the name of Mr Pyke, and is as follows;—lst. That the sum of L “be -voted by the Council for the purchase of the Ivawarau (Bannockburn) Bridge. Such sum to be in addition to the subsidy of L2OOO granted by the Government for that purpose.—2nd. “ That with the view of preventing delay in this business, the Council do proceed to nominate an arbitrator for the approval of the Government, to act in the event of, the offer of the Council and Government being refused by the lessees.” Now, to this we say hoorah ! and we do not think there is more than one, if even there is one solitary individual existing in the whole of the County but what will join ns. and further, but what will use his influence, however small it may be, in assisting getting the motion agreed to. For tabling this motion Mr Pyke is hut carrying out a promise, and for which we accord him his just dues, a vote of thanks. In taking this course, that is, in waiting and watching, and then either reproving or approving, hs the case may be, a public man, wo bold that we but do our duty and one that affords us pleasure. Cur Cromwell contemporary, however, apparently does not believe in such prudence, but must fain have a bout, as if in pure devilry and just to keep his hands in practice, otherwise he would not have been guilty of of the following paragraph which appeared in his issue ot the 15th instant:—
“ The only notice of motion on tho order paper set down for consideration at the next meeting of tho County Council, which takes place on Wednesday, 23rd instant, is the following by Cr Pitches :—“ That the resolution passed by tho Council on the 26 th September, 1877, determining the contract of Messrs M ‘Connochie and Tohill (N0.1.) be altered, and that tho recommendation of the-'County Surveyor 1 that a reduction of L 3 per chain, or L 135, be made from the contract amount,’ he adopted. ” It is worthy of remark that, notwithstanding a rumor that gained currency in Cromwell during Cr Pyke’s visit here last week, to the effect that he had placed, or intended to place, a notice on the paper for the purchase of the Bannockburn Bridge, no such action has been taken by him, although, as we are informed, the County Chairman made more than one distinct promise to that effect.”
In setting alongside of the notice of motion the latter part of the paragraph it will he clear to the most obtuse that in the indecent haste exhibited to find fault with Mr Fyke, a mistake has been made, but as it is but a repetition of the many mistakes that have been made in the Cromwell Argus, we feel called upon to notice it. Wo really do think it was a mistake of the Editor’s taking for gospel this bit cf scan mag, but wo scarcely think it was a mistake of the informant’s.
