I IN MEMORIAM. j It. E. P. 1 — o— One by one they are drifting slowly, Slowly out to the shoreless sea ; One by one 'till we’re left lonely, Lonely for our eternity. Narrower, narrower shrinks the circle, Familiar faces fad* away ; Planting the Cyprus, or the myrtle On their graves, from day to day. Marching, marching over onward Hoary Time remorseless goes ; Pressing, pressing ever forward, Sweeping down both friends and foes. Sorrow ! naught but sorrow in this world hero ! Where happiness is but an empty name ; For every smile there’s found a tear— Alas 1 such tears as doth inflame. Is not the pathway we have travelled Marked by farewells on every side? Have not our hopes been alwavs baffled, Born so quickly, and as quickly died? While here, while here such is our lot, Our portion, grief, and care ; But in another land't will lie forgot, Where eternal joy we’ll share. A.D.H.
