In reply to a letter which appeared in the Melbourne Daily Telegraph, requesting information about Sulieman Pasha, a correspondent supplies the following bit of choice biography : “ Castlemaiue, 3rd September.—Dear Sir—l can give ‘ Inquirer ’ the information he asks for relative to the nationality of Sulieraan Pasha, as he happens to be a relative of my own. His real name is Pat Sullivan, and he was born in the County of Monaghan. When a young man he enlisted in the 97th Highlanders, and soon rose to the rank of color-sergeant During the Fenian excitement he got involved in that foolish movement, was arrested, and kept in prison for some time, but for want of evidence was never brought to trial. In prison he made the acquaintance of James Murtagh, another soldier prisoner; and on their release from prison, being dismissed their regiments, they got into the Turkish service. This was through the influence of O’Reilly Bey, a ’4B man, whose chequered career is so well known. James Murtagh is now Mucktar Pasha, commanding the Turkish armies in Asia. I may add that Sulieman Pasha is still a Christian, and that he contributes handsomely towards the support of an aged mother in Ireland.—l am, &c., John Sullivan.”

A young laity, being charged by a gentleman with having trifled with his feelings, exclaimed “ Well, 1 plead jilty.” “ Man,” says Victor Hugo, “ was the conundrum of the eighteenth century ; woman is the conundrum of the nineteenth century.” We can’t guess her ; but we’ll never give her up—no never.
