While admitting that tho County Council arc doing a vast amount of work in the way of building bridges, making and repairing roads ami tracks, building retaining walls along some of the precipitous sideling roads, and doing other necessary works, and at the same time prepared to give them every credit for same, we cannot but think there are works of far greater importance remaining unnoticed than some that have received attention. We do not pretend to say, nor do wo say, that any ill-advised work has been done, we merely desire to point out there is one piece of road demanding attention, and venture tho opinion that the expending of a few pounds will be easier on tho consciences of the Council than would tho sacrifice of a human life. Tho road we refer to is between the boundary of the town of Alexandra and tho brewery, as, at present, it is but a trap , for the unwary, uud nothing will surprise us less than to hear of an accident if something is not done. It is not for us to say what requires to be done, we have pointed out the danger and there our duty ends. The population of Victoria at tho end of 1876, was 810,800. Tho Victorian Government contemp'ato building in Carlton Gardens for tho purpose ot an International Exhibition at a cost of something like LIOO,OOO. We have to acknowledge with thanks receipt of No. 7 of Hansard, tho Public Works Statement, besides other parliamentary papers. Messrs Weir and Samson, Staffordshire Warehousemen, on whose premises, situate in Prmces-street, Dunedin, a lire was lately discovered, are being proceeded against on a charge of arson. On Monday last they were arraigned, when the case was adjourned till Saturday next. The amount paid by the Victorian Government for prospecting last year was L4G9S, and the gold received 4ozs. Sdwts. IGgrs., or LIOOO per ounce. The vote is consequently discontinued. The Correspondent of the Dunedin Evening Star telegraphs from Hokitika as fob lows lie tho Kumara Bank robbery, Hogg, late agent, was arrested at Kumara, atGp.m. yesterday the 24th instant, on confession, and was remanded to Thursday next. Advice to Mothers !—Are you broken in your rest, by a sick child suffering with tho pain of cutting teeth ? Go at once to a chemist and got a bottle of Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup. It will relieve the poor sufferer immediately. It is perfectly harmless and pleasant to taste, it produces natural quiet sleep, by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes “ as bright as a button.” It soothes tho child, it softens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regulates the bowels, and is the best known remedy tor dyssontary and diarrhoea whether arising from teething or other causes. The Chinese in Northern Australia are 1 showing themsol ves in entirely a new charao- ;! ter to what wo have been nceustoraod to view them. A short time ttgo it was reported that a party of Chinese had stuck tip the i Police Camp, tying up a Policeman, and making off with a sum of money. Wo now hear that a party has stuck up a Warden, robbing him of L2OO. At a meeting of the Government party, 45 members being present, a resolution Was unanimously adopted approving generally of the Government action, and pledging the meeting to support them in passing the following measures as soon as possible, viz.— Education, Census, Land, District Railways, Rating Amendment, Counties Amendment* Municipal Amendment, Inscription of Stock, Revenues, Surveys, Reserves, Fencing, Friendly Societies, Charitable institutions, Misdemeanants, Constabulary, and others. The race meetings in one week in the Dunstan District should make things rather fast for our racing friends, but for all that we think it is just into their hands, and will induce many an one to venture on a week’s outing with sport combined, who otherwise, if the three mootings run over three weeks as formerly, would eschew the lot. The first meeting will bo at Alexandra on Friday, September 28th, with L6O prize money, the second at Clyde on Tuesday, October 2nd, with L7O prize money, and the third at Cromwell on tho following Friday, October sth, with L7O prize money. Tho Dunedin Jockey Club have issued their programmes for the Spring and Autumn Meetings the formei to take place on Friday, November 30th and following day, and comprises Maiden Plate of 40 sovs., five Handicaps of 100, 00, 80, 50 and 30 sovs. respectively ; Selling Race of 40 sovs.; Handicap Trot of 50 sovs.; Handicap Hurdle Race of CO sovs.; Railway Plate of 35 sovs.; Hack Race of 15 sovs., and a Scurry of sovs, being a total of LSCO. The latter to take place on Feb. 2.Bth and two following days, comprising—Maiden Plato of 80 sovs.; Dunedin Cup of 500 sovs.; Newmarket Stakes of 60 sovs.; Champagne Stakes of 10 sovs. each and 100 sovs. added ; Handicaps of 100, 300, 200, 100 and 70 sovs. respectively ; Selling Race of 50 sovs.; Handicap Hurdle of 80 sovs.; Railway Plate of 100 sovs.; Dunedin Derby of 150 sovs.; Novel Race of 80 sovs.; Queen’s Plate of 100 sovs.; Hack Race of 24 sovs. and a Hurry Scurry of , making a total of L 2200. Reports from Doctor’s Point are still satisfactory, the yield from the prospector’s claim for the w*eek being somewhat about LSOO worth of the precious metal. Tho adjoining claim is still getting gold, but nothing definite as to the value of the claim can be said till it is farther opened up. Dewar and party’s tunnel, which is now in nearly 200 feet, has had to be abandoned in consequence of having come across, in the face, a running drift with a considerable body of water in it. The party not to be beat, however, are sinking a shaft further up the hill with the view of striking tho upper reef or getting beyond the drift and water. The existence of snob a strata was never contemplated, and when discovered is the cause of much wonderment and no end of conjecturing as to how a bed of drift and water could have got so high up and so far into a steep range. The estimated height above the present river bed is about ISO feet.
