THE CHINESE AT THE PALMER.
—o—“Trustworthy intelligence to.hand from tho Palmer, respecting tho condition ot tho thousands of Chinese on that field,” tho Brisbane Courier ot Juno 25th reports “Is of a very serious character. , Whilst hundreds of those on tho ground are in tho last stages of destitution, hundreds more arc pressing on, and to use our informant’s words, ‘must die there like rotten sheep.’ Under the pressure of the want they suffer, and inspired by some degress of boldness by tho vast extent to which they are in excess of tho European population, they arc becoming very dangerous even to tho officials on tho field. They gather in large numbers, resist the enforcement of tho goldfields regulations, and threaten with their knives all those who oppose thorn. Their disarmament has almost become a necessity, but it is not possible to carry out with the force the wardens havo at present on the field, and scarcely possible to maintain order. The Government should endeavor to reinforce their wardens on the Palmer, or withdraw them, and confess that ‘ the Caucasian is played out.’ ”
