WASTE LAND BOARD.

At the meeting held oa Wednesday last, the 13th Instant, the following was the Only business of local importance. Mr Griuit appeared on behalf of Mr Marsh to lodge a complaint hgainst persons illegally occupying the reserve at Cromwell, opposite the Kawarati Hirer, and alongside 'the principal street. Mr Grant stated that the land referred to was being held without the slightest shadow of right, to the great detrimeht of propertyholders in the neighbourhood. Mr Strode said that they wore conversant with the facts,of the Case, which had been before them previously . It appeared that the persons referred to had some sort of right, and in that lay the difficulty. Mr Bastings said that the' Corporation of CromvVell had power to move in the matter, hut would not do so. At the same time ho thought that the Hoard had power to remove those persons from their illegal occupation if they chose to do so. If the Board sold property in a town they had a right to protect the purchasers. lie was of opinion

that a legal opinion should be taken on the question. Mr Marsh said that the illegal occupation had been going on for 11 years, and the people who hold the land Cotild elect whoever they liked as mayor and councillors. It was resolved that the whole correspondence on the subject should bo referred to the Board’s solicitor for his opinion as to the best means of affording relief to the applicant, and toOtheis similarly situated. Messrs Handyside and Roberts applied to purchase section 1, block IV,. Rlackstone district, under agricultural lease. Appfoved.
