PETITION FOR THE SEVERANCE OF THE COUNTY.
—o— To His Excellency the Most Honorable Marquis of Normanby, etc., etc,, Governor and Commandor-in-Chief in and over the Colony of New Zealand, and its Dependencies. The Petition of the undersigned residents in the llawea and Kawarau Ridings of the County of Vincent, and duly qualified to be Electors thereof, Humbly Sheweth, That, in thejopinion of your petitioners, it is highly desirable, in the interest of the Colony and of the district in which your petitioners reside, as well as for the better working of the County system of government that a new County should be constituted, having the following boundaries, namely :—The boundaries of the above Ridings above-named, viz., Hawea and Kawarau. That should the Electors of Cardrona Riding, and part of Matukituki Riding in Lake County so desire (as we are informed and believe) they would be more properly placed as part of the proposed new county, andfcyour petitioners would approve the union as tending to make a more compact County with identical interests. However, we would desire to impress upon your Excellency the fact that the Hawea and Kawarau Ridings are in themselves of sufficient extent, and sufficiently 1 populated to warrant the formation of a new County. Your petitioners therefore desire that your Excellency wilQtake the necessary steps towards grantmgjthe object thereof. And, as they are in duty bound, will ever pray, etc. [Here follows 300 signatures.]
