The Dunstan Times Beneath the rule of men ENTIRELY JUST the PEN is MIGHTIER than the SWORD. FRIDAY, MAY 11, 1877.

That an effort is being made to purge the Electoral Rolls is evident by the large number of names objected to and published in the various local newspapers. For the Likes’ District as many as 172 a>o objected to, while for our own—the. Dunstan District—the number is something over 50. That the vicious system of l 01l stuffing has been resorted to there is no doubt; and that it will bo carried on there is still less, until the mode of revision is somewhat altered The fault lies, not with the officers appointed to undertake the .duty, as, bow is it possible for . ne man, and ho a stranger, to know whether those names on the lioll have the proper qualification ; or that those claiming to bo inserted on the Roll are genuine house or property holders? The fault lies with the system, and the sooner fresh regulations are framed, we think, the better. What we would suggest, and we feel assured it is the only plan that would me“t the case, is, that a Commission of local men for each district, wi hj the Returning Officer as Chairman, be appointed as a Revision Court. Not only would the local knowledge of each be of service, but each would be a check on the others to see that no one division had a preponderance of voting power.
