(Condensed from the Daily Times.) His Excellency the Governor tho Marquis of Normanby, arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday morning last, in the steamer Hinemoa. His Excellency was attended on shore by his Aide-de-Carap Lord Henry Phipps, Mr Le Patourel, Commodore Hoskins, and the Hon. Geo, M’Leau Commissioner of Customs, and on arrival were greeted by a large crowd, who behaved with decorous courtesy, and the welcome that was extended to Her Majesty’s representaive was both hearty and sincere. Having received and replied to the address of tho citizens of Port Chalmers, read by his Worship the Mayor, the Gubernatorial party accompanied by the civic dignitaries and others visited the graving dock and other places, and then took their seats in the special train provided for' them, and proceeded to Dunedin, where on arrival the usual address was presented, and the following reply was delivered by His Excellency : “To the Mayor and Councillors of the city of Dunedin. “Mr Mayor, and Gentlemen—l accept with pleasure the renewed assurance which you give-me of the loyalty and attachment of the inhabitants of this portion of New Zealand towards Her Majesty the Queen, and I thank you for the cordial welcome which you have given me as her representative. “ 1 can assure you that there is no part of my duty, of this great and rising Colony, which is more pleasing to myself than that of visiting the different portions of the country, and viewing the progress and improvements that are being made. If, therefore, as you say, my visits to Otago have been less frequent than you could desire, I trust that you will ascribe it to the extent of tho Colony, the numerous places that I have to visit, and to the necessity of my residing for a large portion of the year in Wellington, rather than to any want of will on my part to visit you more frequently. “It was ray intention to have been here in January last, and I was only prevented doing so by the sudden and serious illness of Lady Normanby. “ I shall, I can assure you, view with interest the various improvements which have taken place since my last visit, and 1 think th it the same energy, perseverance, and industry which has marked the development of your city, and the whole district of Otago, m ly long continue to promote the settlement of this rich and prosperous portion of New Zealand. “ I loam with pleasure the further development which you inform me has taken place in your manufacturing industries, and I trust that each suooee ling year may add to your prosperity and happiness. (Signed) “Normanbv.” At the conclusion of the reply at the Railway Station, the Mayor called for three cheers for his Excellency, which was met with a hearty response from tho largo attendance of citizens present at the time. His Excellency and suite, accompanied by tho Mayor and City Councillors, then entered the carriages and drove off to Fern Hill, escorted by Sergeant-Major Sevan and a body of Mounted Police.
