THE YACHTMEN’S POLAR EXPEDITION.
There is some talk of another Polar expedition to he set on foot by the united yacht clubs of the kingdom. Dr Peterman, the German geographer, is now in London in order to consult with the promoters of the venture. Commander Cheyne, R.N . F R G.S , has delivered a lecture on the subject in St. George’s Hall. The lecturer said he would not rest until he had induced a private committee to fit out a single s'np—the Discovery for choice —to i each the Pole by Davis’ Straits and Wellington Channel, and then to the north-west and get into the current from Behring’s Straits, which he believes must drift round the Pole, and return south by Spitbergen. Impressed bv the practicability of this route he would take command of such an expedition, ai d would not think of turning back but would push on and encourage his men by assuring them that thev would not return by the same route, and that every nrle they made would bring them nearer home. Should he fail to secure sufficient patronage in England he would place his services at the disposal - of some other country though it would be a lasting disgrace to England should Germany or America first plant a flag at the Pole.—Horae paper.
