AN OUTRAGE.

■—O— The following particulars of the Coonubaraliran outrage are supplied by a correspondent of tho Mndgee Independent Mary Ann M‘Gregor, an intelligent, pleasing girl 12 y avs old had been on’a visit to a neighbor's and was returning home when she met a person near Ulaimnnbri, nine miles from Coonabrabran; who outraged her person, then murdered her and as a climax robbed her of her few articles of jewellery. Not returning home on Sunday evening her parents became anxious, and having sent to the friend’s she had visited, and found that she left there on Sunday evening they became seized with a fear for her safety, and all the night through a diligent search was made but without avail. Early on Monday in<nniug the body of the deceased was found horribly bruised, one of her arms broken, a portion of her nose bitten off, and a rope drawn so tightly round her neck as to be embedded in the flesh. The body was pointed out to her brother by a shepherd named Thomas Newman, who was tending his flock close by. Suspicion having been attracted to Newman he was arrested, and on being searched previous to being conveyed to the Coouabai abran lockup, a brooch and earrings, which were at once identified as belonging to the deceased were found upon him, and on a careful search of his hut being made other articles of the deceased were tound concealed beneath his bed. A magisterial inquiry was commenced at the residence of the father of the deceased and adjourned to the Courthouse, Coonabarabran. There is a great excitement prevailing, and deep feeling of horror at the horrible death the poor child must have suffered at the hands of her violator and murderer. The people are intensely incensed against Newman, and the police can only protect him from violence with difficulty. The body is preserved in spirits, pending the arrival of a qualified medical man from Gulgoug, about 120 miles.”
